âWhen we first met, you told me that you do not trust me at all.â
âWell, when we slept together in very tight quarters the first night and you didnât even so much as give me a peck on the forehead to say goodnight, I figured that either you are gay, or you were a gentleman that I could trust.â
âOh, and which of those categories have you decided that I fall into?â
âThe jury is still out.â
The server returns to the table with the wine, an iced bucket, and two dinner menus. He goes through all of the wine pouring machinations and tells them he will be right back to take their order.
âDonât be right back. We already know what we want.â
âOkay then sir, I am ready when you are.â
âWe will both have the caprese salad, followed by the Lake Trout sautéed in butter with chives, a side of asparagus, and some well-done French fries. And for dessert, we will both have the soufflé, one vanilla and the other chocolate.â
âI am sorry sir, but we do not have French fries on the menu.â
âOkay then, would you mind asking the chef if they can be prepared? I am happy to pay extra for them. I had them here before and they were the best.â
âYes, we did have them and they were good, but the chef decided to take them off of the menu.â
âPlease ask, okay?â
âSure sir, no problem.â
Claire fidgets with her napkin and looks at Hank with a very serious look on her face.
âHank, that is a pretty fancy meal. Are you sure you want to spend that kind of money?â
âHa! What else will I do with the money? It is my pleasure, believe me.â
âMay I help pay for it?â
âNorma, youâre not even working yet, I canât ask you to do that. Plus, it isnât about the money at all. It is something that I enjoy and I want you to enjoy it with me, so it is worth every penny.â
The meal and the wine were more superb than Claireâs greatest expectations. Each smiled with every bite and the soufflé was the coup dâétat. The evening could not have begun any better.
âHank, what next?â
âLetâs see. Do you gamble?â
âI like to gamble a little but I really donât know any more than merely dropping a chip on a number in roulette. How about you?â âWell, I am not what you would consider a gambler, but I know how to play all of the games.â
âHow would you know that?â
âItâs called âtruckers killing time on the internetâ. I play the games for fun. No money changes hands.â
âOkay, I have an idea Hank. I will do the gambling and put up the money. You stand behind me and tell me what to do. If I win, we split the pot. If I lose, itâs my loss.â
âNorma, I cannot let you do that.â
âYes, you can and we will win. Excuse me for a moment or two Hank. I need to use the potty.â
âIâll be right here Norma, no worries.
