âSo howâd you talk Horatio into letting you go outside at night?â Paige asked the next night.
âI wore him down with my shy smile and good looks.â
She tossed her head back and laughed. Her dark waves of hair tumbled over her shoulders. âLook at you, using all that charm youâve got. I knew you could do it.â
I forced a smile to my face. Truth be told, the past day had been more challenging than Iâd expected with the hallucinations taking effect. Iâd imagine that I was standing beside a wall, and when Iâd go to lean against it, Iâd find nothing but air.
Do that a few times and you get skeptical real quick when it comes to wallsâand other things.
But this was real. Paige and I were outside. It was nighttime, and we were sitting on the back deck. Horatio had taken a group out hunting for the werewolf. Since he wouldnât let me track the creature, the next best thing was knowing that he was doing it. Matt had also gone with them, and I knew Matt would tattle if anything strange happened.
Paige grabbed my hand and squeezed it. âHow do you feel?â
âGroggy. Like Iâm underwater.â
A pained look sliced across her face. âI wish all of this was over.â
âMe too.â
âI know you do. Of course. Itâs selfish of me to want this for myself. I want it for you, too. I want you to be done with this, and I want you back the way you wereâgrumpy.â
It was my turn to laugh. I motioned to my lap, and she rose from her chair and climbed on top of me, hooking her arms around my neck.
She smelled good. She felt good too, all silky and softâboth her clothing and her skin. My heart tightened just looking at her. Never, not ever had I experienced these feelings with anyone but Paige. Iâd had other girlfriends before, yes, and whom Iâd loved very much. But Paige made my chest constrict, made it feel like a hand was squeezing the life from my heartâin a good way.
She made me want to live.
And in turn I wanted to.
âIt must be killing you that Horatioâs hunting the werewolf and not you.â
I sighed and slumped back onto the chair. âIt wouldnât if I wasnât reminded of it.â
âSorry.â She walked her fingers up my chest. âHave you been feeling okay?â
I shrugged. âAs well as I can. Horatio hasnât told me any more about what happens next. Am I supposed to kill another withering for the third dose? Is there a third dose?â
âA little transparency would be nice.â She pressed her lips to my forehead. âYouâre doing an amazing job of staying positive.â
I tipped my head back and held her gaze. âIf itâs due to anything, itâs due to you.â
âI like to think so.â
I smiled and drank in the sight of her. Paige was what made all of this worth it. Knowing that she was waiting for me was what pushed me. If it wasnât for her, I mightâve succumbed to the witheringâs pull long ago.
