Chapter Seventeen
With the bonds of blood and camaraderie coming full circle, the force that darkens the day shall be forced to hide in the night. When souls touch and love blooms, the bonds shall strengthen more until the darkness is banished into a realm beyond the reach of man. Safety is imminent, but only as long as each follows their heart and remains pure to the past.

Morning dawned, imbuing the day with light and fresh hope. Skye and her mom decided to visit the hospital after breakfast and then her mom wanted to stop at one of the local stores to pick up supplies. The accident had damaged most of hers, and according to her, 'There are some things no self-respecting witch is ever without.'
The sun had barely crested the distant line of the ocean, traffic was light and the hospital parking lot near empty. After a sleepless night, Skye didn't feel like talking and her mother's usual chatter was noticeably absent. They moved carefully through the hospital taking care not to interrupt the early morning schedule of the nurses attending waking patients. With a one-finger dictate from the nurse, Flora motioned Skye into the room for the first visit.
The door closed soundly, leaving her with stifling heat and the constant beep, beep of machines. She felt nauseous. Her father looked gaunt, so unlike his usual tanned, muscular, energetic self. She moved to touch his cheek and hesitated when she saw a flicker of movement from his eyelids, but she remembered a nurse saying that might happen and that it was nothing more than a reflex. Sighing, she cupped his cheek with her palm and shivered. He was so cold. But that wasn't all. There was more. A hint of malignancy washed over her so quickly she could almost convince herself she'd imagined the sensation. She needed to probe with her own senses, which could be somewhat dangerous considering her father's condition.
But she had to try. This was her father for goodness sake. The man who raised her with love and an unwavering ability to step between her and her mother whenever circumstances called for an intermediary. Relaxing her mind, she probed deep inside her body for the flow of her own lifeblood. It was a vital connection to make if she wanted to explore her father's aura or inner being. Without full control of her own energy flow and blood path, she couldn't hope to read another's. Relax. Breathe. Spinning and whooshing through her veins, carrying the oxygen and nutrients to sustain life. There. She'd made a connection. She was one with herself.
Now, she reached out. Bursting from within, she let her senses probe and fuse with her father's aura. Oh, so wavery thin. So weak. She felt herself weaken. Couldn't go too deep or she might not be able to return. She recognized his essence. Warmth engulfed her in a comforting embrace and then nudged her forward, almost as if he were trying to show her something.
