CHAPTER 15
Air burned my lungs as I drew a harsh breath. The moment I realized I was back in my body, I jumped from my seat. I coughed uncontrollably, and my eyes watered from the sting sensation in my lungs. Chilo shot up after me, coughing himself; he handed me the chalice to settle my fit first. Gia and Pipa watched us closely; neither said anything.
âPipa,â Chilo stood while staring at his hand, âtake her when sheâs ready,â he left the room.
I wanted to go after him, to see if he was alright, but I didnât. I needed to process what I saw, what I felt. Our afterlife together seemed normal to Chilo, but from his reaction to my afterlife appearance, I wasnât.
I cleared my throat, âIâd like to leave now.â
The room spun as soon as Pipa touched my shoulder. I hadnât seen her move from the end of her table. Before I could make sense of everything, I was standing in downtown Austin. Pipa was gone. It was nighttime, and several streets were closed off. Drunk people stumbled around me. The roads were only blocked on the weekend, but I had only been gone since Sunday. Today should be Monday. But a crowd like this, on a Monday, is weird, even for Austin. I thought about Faviaâs sleep spell. I had assumed it only lasted a day, but what if it was longer? I had no way of knowing. I never even questioned it.
âAnd thatâs exactly how you ended up almost going to magical prison and getting married!â. I shouted.
Several club-goers jumped at my outburst, but I didnât care. I was beyond pissed. I had opened my heart to Rose. Now I realize that somewhere deep within me, I wanted them to like me. I wanted them to accept me. I wanted to know about my biological mother.
I headed towards the gallery. I half-walked, half-ran as I pushed through the crowd and rounded the corners. I was dressed in the clothes from Athra; people thought I was part of an event. Thanks again Austin, the fact that I was from a magical bloodline wearing tradique garbs of my people somehow seemed normal to the crowd.
I spotted the gallery as I made my last turn. The lights were off, but I recognized the familiar shape. I ran faster. I punched the code on the door and went inside. The sensor lights turned on. A naked Joy was being fucked against my large tree sculpture by some random guy. Joyâs eyes were closed, and her legs were held up by the statue. The guyâs back was disfigured and covered with the most horrible warts and pimples Iâd ever seen. He reminded me of the shop-keep girl! Someone from Athra was in my shop! I screamed.
âRika!?â Joy scrambled. She pushed the guy off her. They rushed to pick up their nearby clothes, âOh my God! I am so sorry,â she said between breaths. âYouâve been gone for a week. Weâve been so worried about you.
