The rest of the day passed in a blur of anger and Viviane telling me to forgive Frankie and apologize. Easy for her to say. She wasn’t the one who had to deal with the consequences of Frankie’s actions. Which was now standing at the door of the dining hall watching me.

He obviously thought I was going to try to avoid him. I mean, that had been my plan, but still. It was infuriating. Before he could charge over to my table and make a scene, I stood.

With a parting glare at Frankie, whose only acknowledgement of my presence was the slight pink to her cheeks, I stalked over to where Warren leaned against the door frame of the dining hall.

He said nothing, but turned and started walking once I was close. I followed him to the classroom. It was set up like normal, candles flickering. The only difference was what looked to be a folder sitting to the side.

“What in the world were you doing with Quinn last night?” Warren asked as he shut the door.

Sticking out my chin, I shrugged. “I don’t see how that’s any of your business.”

He ran his fingers through his hair like he wanted to start yanking out clumps. With a shuddering breath, he pulled himself together. It was disturbing how quickly he could switch from raging to calm. “Quinn is not your friend, okay?”

“Apparently friends are hard to come by these days,” I said, crossing my arms. I knew I’d been a jerk to Frankie last night, but telling on me to Warren, of all people? That was low.

Warren scoffed. He matched my stance. “Maybe if you didn’t go around talking back to everyone and acting like you don’t need anyone, people wouldn’t find it so difficult to be around you.”

“Big words from a guy who has a permanent scowl on his face.”

Warren took a step closer to me. His voice was low. “Why can’t you get it through your head how serious this is? The Council won’t just stop at taking your magic. Mattias is pushing for imprisonment or worse.”

My stomach turned to ice. I dropped my arms, trying not to shiver. “I understand how serious this is.”

“Then why won’t you let me help you?” he asked. “And why are you working with Quinn, of all people?”

“I’m not working with Quinn,” I said. Why did everyone assume I was an idiot?

A strange expression crossed over his face as he studied me. It was almost something like pain, which couldn’t be right.

“Then tell me what you were doing?” His eyes darted between mine. His cheeks were flushed. It made the green in his gaze brighter. Warmth that had nothing to do with my powers pooled low in my stomach.

“I was trying to reconnect with my magic.” It sounded stupid now that I was saying it. “So we wouldn’t have to do this anymore.” I gestured at the candles.

“With Quinn?” he asked, his voice sharp.

“No, by myself,” I said. “Quinn caught me on the grounds.
