ACTION AT TOLOSA

Two days after Vitoria, Graham was sent to intercept the retreat of a French corps under General Foy, who had not been present at the battle. On the 25th, Foy made a stand at the walled town of Tolosa, thirty-five miles north-east of Vitoria. He had 16,000 men and occupied a strong position in a defile. Graham, with 26,000 troops, sought to evict him with a combination of a wide turning movement and a general attack. The main assault was spearheaded by the 1st Light Battalion – as the more senior of the two KGL light battalions, it typically led the way. But it was bloodily checked by the town’s strong defences, and a cannon gun had to be brought forward, with the 2nd Light Battalion in support, to break down the gate. Foy retreated before he could be cut off and escaped during the night. The KGL suffered unnecessarily heavy losses because of the flawed planning of the attack: its five infantry battalions in the 1st Division lost 147 officers and men killed or wounded.13
