Chapter 10

Cauldius’s jet-black scorpion tail smacked against the stone floor of his study. His position as commander of the infernal legion was in danger. He had committed high treason and defied his king. He knew the arena was beckoning him back to once again prove his worth. The workbench he was using to enchant his best sword shook dangerously.

“Do be careful my lord! The incantations are still unstable…I would very much loath to repair this entire wing of the palace.” A stern-voiced gnome cried, dashing across the room and steadying the desk with his long-fingered hands.

“You should be the one to take care, Aiko. I do not suffer insubordination…but you are not wrong, care is indeed needed. I find myself in an ever-increasing need of caution.” He gazed up at a large demonic skull looming on the topmost shelf. It propped up a large number of heavy tomes. “So much has changed since that damned hero arrived in our world. It is nothing like the heroes of the past have been. Lord Sariel hardly paid them any mind, but now—”

“Now he has taken a firm interest in the newest one, this Sigurd. Why, he even went so far as to attack the northern kingdom’s capital on Halloween! Such a thing has not been seen in centuries. I wish I could have seen the rumored golems he crafted from the capital’s graves…can you imagine Lord Cauldius?” Aiko interrupted, swept up in a fit of admiration for their king and the horrors he had unleashed upon the Volbrom’s people hardly two months ago. Naturally, rumors flooded the demon king’s realm and excitement grew, spreading like wildfire until even the lowliest imp was aware of the current events. The demons had had precious little to do or look forward to in the past century. Indeed apart from Sigurd, the only other hero who had ever offered their master even a fraction of challenge had been Thror the Winged Ruin, whose soul was now trapped in the infernal throne along with the rest of the heroes from ages past. There was even a dark rumor that the curse had resurfaced and that the black dragon had been seen gliding over the world.

“D-d-do you suppose the foolish rumors hold any shred of merit my lord?” Aiko’s voice lowered several degrees as thoughts of the dragon sighting entered his mind.

“What I think Aiko is that you have forgotten yourself and the value of your head if you think it wise to utter such nonsense in front of the king’s most trusted servant.” Cauldius growled darkly eyeing the doubtful looking gnome with a cold anger. “Foolish is all too right. They are nothing more than mere rumors. Our king is mighty and will rule this unworthy realm to the end of time. Now get back to work before I change my mind and cut your overly excited tongue from your treason uttering lips.” With that he turned his attention back to his blade which looked like a katana, only it was much too large and too wide for a normal man to wield.
