Wh-what?

I stared at the headmasters across the table, and they stared back, their eyes dead serious. The tension was pulverizing as I searched desperately for anything to say.

“There's no use denying it,” said Vega, the second-youngest headmaster. He had brown hair with faint streaks of gray along the sides, and he wore it in a short ponytail. He had bushy black eyebrows and striking, pitch-black eyes. “We've spoken to your friends. In exchange for their continued enrollment at ENU, they've given you up.”

How is this possible? Fena seemed serious when she said she'd lie for me, and I got that sense from Axle, too. It couldn't have been Atlas. Nobody else knows the truth either.

“Sneaking around the halls at night is one thing,” Vega continued. “But destruction of school property. Running from Inquisitor Imandr when he commanded you to stop,” he pounded his fist on the table, “that is unforgivable!”

I turned to look at the cloaked man.

He’s an inquisitor? What’s an inquisitor doing at ENU?

“Your behavior,” Rowan said, “is unbecoming of a student at this prestigious institution. Expulsion is the only proper punishment.”

I felt like I was about to cry. My heart raced. Pins and needles were poking me from all directions. I thought I had gotten away clean.

My breathing quickened as I raced to defend myself. “Wait, hold on!” I stammered.

“Silence!” Vega screamed, now pounding on the table with both hands. “You’ve made a mockery of our university and its rules!”

How is it they know? Beyond a shadow of a doubt, at that?

“If I may,” said Alrune.

“You have the floor,” Rowan muttered.

“Mr. Dragstenn shows incredible potential. He is unusual. Although he has not reached his full potential, I believe his expulsion from our university would be a detrimental blow to the future of our nation.” He turned and smiled at me. “I see great promise in him. Can there truly be no other way?”

All eyes turned to Rowan. He closed his red-rimmed eyes and stood for a moment before sitting and laying his staff across the table.

“Does anyone else agree with Headmaster Alrune's motion?” he asked with a sigh that rattled in his throat. He lifted a hand to signal the voting had begun.

Vega sat back and folded his arms, shaking his head in disapproval.

Norah's hand lifted from the table.

“I have spoken with Miss Hanley,” she said. “She remarked that Mr. Dragstenn's magic control is peerless. She spoke at length about his tremendous potential.” She turned her eyes to Rowan. “That woman does not hand out compliments. For this reason, I would see that Mr. Dragstenn remain enrolled.”

Norah was the youngest of the headmasters and the only female. She was the daughter of a high priest and a talented verbal caster. She wore her bleached blonde hair in braids that ran alongside her temples, had glacier-blue eyes, and carried her chin high. She was beautiful, and I never thought that more than I did now.

“Hanley said that?” asked Edwin as he rubbed his chin. Edwin was the only other one who could be considered young.
