IT TAKES ME A SPLIT second to compute what’s happening in front of my eyes. Annalisa might as well have been waving a red flag. The second she raised her hand, old Roger, the meanest bull on the property, set his sights on her. How the fuck did he get out?

Fuck!

“Hang on, Annalisa! Don’t run!” I shout. I don’t know if she can hear me, but she’s holding her ground. Old Roger is too—at least he’s not charging anymore. They’re face to face, about twenty feet apart from each other. Too damn close.

I whistle for help on the way to Merle. Grabbing my rope from the saddle bag, I quickly mount up. It’s been a long time since I’ve done any roping, but I’m one of the best in the family.

“Heeeeyaaaah.” I give out a warning call and catch Shane West’s attention. I helped Shane when he inherited his new ranch, and he helped me get the lay of the land before I started my business. Shane knows his shit, and he jumps on his ride in a flash.

I give Merle a swift kick on his flanks, and he breaks into a gallop from a full stop. “Don’t run, darlin’,” I shout, racing to Annalisa as fast as Merle can take me. My hands clench the reins; my body’s tight as a drum. And my heart. Jesus. I’d never get over it if anything happened to her.

Annalisa peeks over at me. All the color in her pretty face is gone. Unmoving, she’s white as a ghost. Old Roger hasn’t given up on her yet. He groans and snorts, kicking up dust.

Merle starts prancing beneath me. He knows what’s up. This isn’t his first rodeo. “Get to that woodpile behind you,” I yell, “and stay low!”

I see the words register, but my heart stops when Annalisa braces herself like she’s going to make a run for it. It’s a perfectly normal reaction, but the absolute wrong move.

“Don’t run,” I say, keeping my voice calm. “Don’t turn your back on him.”

Roger lowers his head at the same time as Annalisa takes a tentative step backward. In an instant, dirt flies and all hell breaks loose as Roger goes after her again.

“Hey, bull,” I shout, racing between him and Annalisa to cut off his path. Roger eyes me, and I circle his perimeter. “Over here, bull.” It’s enough to distract him, but now he knows he’s about to be penned and makes a break for the trees. Shit.

I spot Shane in my peripheral. “Left!” I shout. “Don’t let him get in those trees.” Shane nods and cuts left, giving Roger a wide berth. That ornery old bull is too damn smart. He turns on his heels and charges right at full speed. I dig my heels into Merle, and we burn the breeze, catching up to him just at the tree line.

That damn bull’s big ass is right in front of me. I take my shot and whip the rope over my head and throw it.
