Chapter 9: Sara

“For the record, I still do not approve of this.” Tilly crossed her arms over her chest as I taped the second letter to the door of my guest room—though it was more of a sign than a letter. It read: Please accept the drink in the library.

“You think it’s too suspicious? Perhaps I should add something to assure them it is not meant to be a trick.”

Tilly narrowed her gaze. “That is not what I meant. What if this spy is a man? Your letter is too suggestive. We should wait for King Jesu to confirm whether any ill is at hand.”

A small part of me wanted to deny the possibility of anything sinister. Because I did not want to admit that another Rebel attack could happen. But I wasn’t as naïve as everyone thought. The pit in my stomach clenched tight and I pressed my fist against my navel.

“You’re right. I’m sorry. Let’s go ask His Majesty. If Jesu dislikes the idea for any reason, I will remove the letter and blood from the library.” The pain in my stomach grew and my throat thickened. I turned away from Tilly and gripped the doorknob. “I need to use the lavatories. Please go on. I’ll catch up.”

I burst into the room and went straight to the toilet, locking the bathroom door behind me. Breathing hard, I sat on the cool tile near the tub and hugged my knees to my chest.

What if Tilly’s right? What if the spy is double crossing us and feeding information to the enemy? What if they mean to hurt me?

My heart hammered in my chest, and I tugged on the ends of my hair. Was it possible? I was a der Wölfe. Fifteenth in line for the throne, but a der Wölfe nonetheless. If anyone wanted to hurt Brinnon—really hurt him—kidnapping or killing me would be one way to do it.

Too suggestive, Tilly had said. Was I inviting trouble?

I wanted to go to the library right now and take it all back.

That’s what I’ll do.

A knock sounded at the door, and I gasped.

“My Lady?”

I sighed, as it was only Tilly.

“Are you all right?”

“Yes. Be right there.”

I stood and looked at my reflection. For some reason, the face that haunted me all my life came to mind. Green eyes. So serious all the time. Always scheming. That jaw. Clenched so tight, just like the hard muscles that corded his broad shoulders. He didn’t smile often, but when he did … a girl could lose herself chasing his charm. Jalmari.

“Princess?”

“Coming.” I flushed the toilet for no reason other than to make the lie seem real. Then I went to the sink and splashed some water on my face. My stomach still felt as though I’d been kicked in the gut, but the pain would dull.

I just need to keep it together for one more day.

I opened the bathroom door to find Tilly sitting on the edge of the bed. She stood as I dropped my gaze.
