CHAOS

As much as I wanted to catch up to Merek and Efa, I didn’t have it in me. No sleep and moving up and down half the ship left my body wasted. If I didn’t rest at least a little, I was going to fall down a ladder at some point. It’d require more energy than I had at the moment to convince them to stay with Rabbit and me. I spent a good amount of time considering what my argument would be.

But at some point, my eyes closed and didn’t open again until they were ready.

Rabbit had promised to stick by me. I didn’t believe it, so when I wake, it surprises me he’s still here. He must have gone for a while, however. I find a full canteen of water next to me when I sit up. It makes me smile, seeing it there. The old man may be a fierce survivor, but he isn’t without his compassion.

I gulp half the canteen down, spilling a good amount of it on my shirt. I don’t mind. The feel of moisture against my skin is calming. It’s like the one time Efa and I snuck off with a large crate and found a place to fill it full of water. Once we figured out a way to heat the water, we took turns bathing. I never had another chance to do that, but I remember it like it was yesterday. The bath made my skin so smooth for most of a day, I almost felt like a real girl.

“Thanks,” I say to Rabbit, holding up the canteen to him and nodding.

Even though Rabbit acknowledges my gratitude, he remains stiff. I frown then and watch him. He’s nervous about something, though my brain is still waking up and too slow to consider what it means.

“Not, not safe,” Rabbit says, bouncing on his haunches and glancing at the door.

That’s all I need to know. I grab my weapons belt and shoot to my feet to put it on. I can’t tell how long I slept, but it was too long. Now trouble may have come to this level, and I have no intel about it.

“What is it?” I whisper, moving to him.

“Someone, someone, someone,” Rabbit says.

“More than one, I bet,” I say, my hand sliding down to my holster. “A lot more than one. Get behind the table.”

At least I shut the door and turned out the light. That won’t stop a true pursuit team from checking in here, but it will give us plenty of warning if they do. We’ll still have to escape the room before they gas us with canisters. Some of those devices can render us unconscious in a few seconds. We aren’t prepared for that kind of fight.

“Hold here,” I say. “I’m going to do a little reconnaissance.”

Rabbit makes a strange sound and ducks behind the exam table, his eyes scanning the walls for an escape. I doubt there is one. He would have found it already, and we would have made fast use of it.
