SIXTEEN

Even after her time at the palace in Orum, with Prince Dvarius, Lady Catarine, and the Queen—especially the Queen—Kayden was impressed, even slightly intimidated, by her surroundings.

It was more than the food . . . more than the company . . . more than the lavish décor.

There was something humbling about the Cadarian Royal reception of them. It was what Kayden had always imagined . . . on the few occasions she had allowed herself the opportunity to daydream about having a life outside of the Order.

Everything about this dinner—the room, the food, even the lighting—spoke of familiarity. There was no call to stand on ceremony, no obvious air of formality, only welcome and warmth.

Even to the way they had all been addressed since their formal introduction spoke of familiarity.

Not that I've had much experience around royals. Though Kayden knew enough not to use anyone's first name without permission, she sensed that the complete absence of titles was not a common occurrence, and it put her on edge . . . especially when the Cadarian Queen addressed her.

Dvarius responded with the perfect amount of awe and respect in his tone, and before Kayden could examine her feelings at his very obvious rescue, she looked up at him and realized he was looking at her very much the same way The Queen and King were looking at each other.

Heat spread across her cheeks as a dozen memories of intimate moments stole into her thoughts, sending a blush of color rushing through her and a blaze of desire in her eyes.

She wanted to look away from Dvarius. She was desperate to maintain the distant, professional exterior she had built up during the afternoon, but the matching heat in Dvarius' eyes held her captive and she felt her resolve melting away.

And she could no longer seem to remember why it had been important to her to begin with.

For several minutes, she was trapped in a hazy bubble of memory. Conversation resumed around her, but she sat silently, thinking of the few glorious days they had spent aboard the airship that had begun simply as a means of escape.

Only when Wessel reached over and nudged her, did she realize someone must have asked her a question.

And when she turned her attention to her dinner companions, she realized the King was grinning broadly and the Queen was trying .
