Excerpt from the Journal of Daisy Mae Devlin

‘Though Cass takes an ambivalent stance on Cissy, I am less uncertain about my feelings. In fact, I cannot stand the woman. As a schemer myself, I recognise another schemer when I see one. I have observed how Cissy still looks at Joe and am not convinced she has ceased to hanker after him. Cissy appears to give poor Abel the run-around, and he often appears dazed and confused by her behaviour towards him.

I do not trust her one inch and resolve to keep an eye on the situation......’

Cass

Almost a week after Joe’s conversation with Luke, the latest report on the outlaw band put them no nearer to Epiphany, so Cass and Joe continued to live in the valley.

Once Joe left for town that morning, Cass sat down at the parlour table and began a letter to Catori (who had recently given birth to her second child), when someone knocked at the door. She rose to answer, and with a sinking heart, spotted Cissy through the front window. Cass arranged her face into a smile and opened the door.

“Thank you! If you are not too busy at the moment, perhaps we could begin the lessons at once?” Cissy entreated. “The desperados might turn up at any time, and I would like to be prepared.”

“Okay, I can finish writing my letter later. I just need to change my footwear and fetch my rifle and some ammo,” Cass explained.

Cass unlocked the gun cabinet in the hallway and removed her Winchester and a box of ammunition. She slipped off her leather moccasins and donned the new boots Joe had ‘rigged’ for her as a precaution, instead of her scuffed old cowboy boots. Cass plucked her poncho from the hallstand and ushered Cissy out the front door.

They descended the steps, and as Cass turned towards the old horse corral where she habitually practiced her marksmanship, Cissy put a hand on her arm and shook her head. “Oh no, not there. Abel might come home and see us. I’m not sure he would approve of me learning how to handle a gun; he can be
