They passed through the neatly dug positions of A Company of the Borders, who had not so far been hotly engaged, and who were horrified to receive this rush of dirty and dishevelled men, many in bloody bandages, and carrying enemy weapons. Major Powell was asked by a young captain to ‘take his bloody shower out of his company area’. There were only 90 men left, and they were soon reorganized into unit groups, the 50 men of 156 Battalion into two platoons. The Brigadier walked down to report to Division HQ, followed by the others to be re-equipped with weapons and ammunition before being allocated to positions in the perimeter around Oosterbeek, which was now being formed. There was some food and water. A few hours’ sleep was grabbed before the next battle was to start.

Lt Col Smythe, although wounded, had already reached the Hartenstein with the 70 men left of his battalion, and there were others who were able to rejoin the Brigade, especially the 4th Parachute Squadron RE which had got through in two parts, one of which was now holding ground near Ommershof under command of the Independent Parachute Company. The 10th Battalion had been sent to hold a crossroads on the east side of the perimeter, but first had to attack and drive out the German SS troops.
