Chapter 18
WIRRON SAID IT loudly, obviously trying to humiliate us in front of everyone.
Tommis, whoâd been leaning against the counter beside me stood up and loomed over him. âIf you value your job, steward junior, youâll watch how you talk to me. In fact, you should probably be addressing me as sir, donât you think?â
I heard a kitchen helper snicker and satisfaction surged through me; Wirron and Brynn absolutely deserved each other.
They glared at each other for a moment before Tommis said, âCome on, Princess. Letâs not keep Jonan waiting.â
I let Tommis take my hand and push past Wirron in the direction of the door. Catching sight of Cookâs distress, Nyaâs shock and Brynnâs self-righteousness, I felt my world being further turned upside down on its axis.
Making our way up the stairs, Tommis didnât let go of my hand. I didnât even stop him when, outside Jonanâs office, Tommis kissed me on the lips and then smirked when Wirron gasped in surprise. But the satisfaction quickly faded when Jonan barked through the door after Iâd knocked.
The aggressive stance Jonan had taken up, standing with his hands resting on the desk in front of him, made my heart beat nervously. âSit down you two,â he commanded. âWirron! Get over to see Mitchell for that information I asked for. No excuses this time.â
For a moment it seemed like Wirron would argue, but he obviously thought better of it because he shut the door behind him without a word.
âWhat is going on with you two? Iâve had a hundred reports of you being seen together all over this estate. You are still a lordâs son, Tommis, and she,â he said, pointing at me while still looking at him, âis still a damned maid. What am I supposed to do?â Jonan demanded. âIâm telling you both right now. Smarten up or Iâll be locking her away somewhere and Iâll send you back to school, whether you like it or not.â
My eyes were on the floor, but I heard Tommis take a breath to argue. Jonan cut him off, yelling even louder now. âI donât want to hear it! From now on you will present yourself for meals in the dining room on time, so your father can see you. And she will help in the kitchen to serve the food, no exceptions! And the rest of the time, youâll keep a low profile. Do you understand me?â
I nodded my head vigorously without looking up.
âI canât hear you!â
âYes,â I squeaked.
âTommis?!â
When he didnât answer, I turned my head in time to see the defiance on his face slowly fading. âFine,â he said sullenly.
âGood. Tomorrow morning I want you both back here in this office after breakfast, and youâd better have some progress to report or Iâm going to lose all patience with this madness. Now get out of my sight.â
Once we were outside in the hall, I felt tears begin to sting my eyes; that had been awful.
âAh, Princess, come here.â Pulling me into his arms, he squeezed me tight.
