Fletch and his mother got home around six. He got the vacuum cleaner out and began circling around the downstairs. Within five minutes he thought he had done the job completely. He put the vacuum away and headed up to his room. He was just picking up his skateboard magazine when he heard a light knock on his door. It was his mother. “Can I come in for a second?” she asked.

“Sure,”said Fletch.

“I was just thinking Bradley, about our talk at the restaurant. I think it is neat that you asked me if I still love your father. I know people make mistakes. And I think he made a mistake. I am sure he feels badly about what he did. And I bet he’d give anything to erase it all and have everything back to normal. Of course it wouldn’t be easy for me to let that happen. He caused me a lot of hurt, and I’m not over it yet, at all. But who knows Bradley, maybe things will change. Maybe your Dad and I will start to talk again and maybe we’ll work things out. Would you like that?”

“Yes Mom, I would like that. I know it wouldn’t be easy for you, but I would like you and Dad to be one again,” said Fletch.

“Okay Bradley, thanks,” said Fletch’s Mom as she went back downstairs.

Fletch laid back on his bed and thought about it all. It was good that he and his mother could talk about his Dad like this. And it was good that his Dad had come to the school and talked to him. He decided he should go right down now and tell his Mom about his father’s visit. He thought about it. It might be good. It might change everything. It might change everything...

“Fletch!” The voice made Fletch open his eyes wide.

“Fletch wake up, we can’t watch a movie while you’re asleep.” It was Mel. Fletch pushed himself up on his bed and looked around. He had fallen asleep. He looked at the clock. It was seven thirty five.

“Oh gee,” said Fletch, “I guess I fell asleep. Thanks for waking me Mel.”

“Well get up Fletch. Your mother is making popcorn for the movie,” said Mel.

Fletch and Mel went downstairs to the TV room. Fletch’s Mom came in with two big bowls of popcorn and she returned in a minute with two big glasses of pop. “Okay boys, you’re ready to roll, enjoy your movie,” said Fletch’s mother.

Both boys sat quietly watching the movie. The only noise they made was the crunching of popcorn. And then Mel spoke up, “Hey Fletch, remember the time your father took us to the show in Chester?”

“Yeah I remember, what was the name of that movie, something about a car.”

“Yeah I can’t remember the name either, but that was a fun time. Your father bought us all kinds of popcorn and candy and then he took us to MacDonald’s.”

It had been a fun time, Fletch remembered. Probably the last time his father took him anywhere.
