CHAPTER EIGHT

Jo eyed the woman who was looking at the hats. She’d been in there for nearly an hour, and still hadn’t made a selection. Normally, that wouldn’t bother her, but Jo had finished a cup of coffee a little while ago and needed a chance to step away from the register for a second. The woman had been looking at the same few hats, and each time she seemed to make a selection, she turned back before she reached the register and began examining them again. It was driving her crazy.

She did her best not to let her frustration show in her voice as she asked, for the third time, “Are you sure you don’t have any questions, ma’am?”

“Oh, I’m fine,” the woman replied with a wave of her hand. “I’m just trying to find the best one.”

Jo desperately wished she knew what her customer meant by “best,” exactly, and how she could help her find it, but all of her other polite queries had been met by equally polite assurances by the other woman that she didn’t need any help at all.

Normally, having one person working alone in the yarn shop wasn’t an issue, especially mid-day and in the middle of the week. Even on busy days, there were enough lulls that a single employee could step away from the counter for a quick bathroom break without leaving someone unattended in the store. Jo didn’t think this woman would grab a hat and run if she left the room, but her policies were policies for a reason, and if she didn’t let her employees leave customers unattended in the store, she shouldn’t do so herself either.

Still, this woman just was not leaving, and Jo was getting desperate. She shifted, then cleared her throat and spoke up again. “Are you sure there isn’t anything I can help you with? Are you looking for a specific color? If we don’t have what you want, I’m happy to take a custom order.”

“I’m just looking for one that doesn’t have any errors,” the woman said, giving Jo a polite smile. “The colors are lovely, but they all seem to have at least one small flaw. I know it probably seems silly, but it’s going to bother me if one of the designs is off even by a little bit. Like this snowflake one, for example. One of the snowflakes is slightly lopsided.”

Jo’s eyelid twitched. “They’re all handmade by local hobbyists,” she said, forcing cheer into her voice. “I make sure all of their work is up to standard, of course, but I don’t usually worry about it if there’s a missed stitch here or there. If the patterns aren’t quite what you’d like, would you be interested in one of the solid-colored hats? That red one on top I made myself just last week.”

The woman took it and examined it, trying it on and looking at herself in the small mirror that was hanging on the wall next to the rack. Jo held her breath and then let it all out when the woman put the hat back with a shake of her head.
