“You look shell shocked, yet happy. What are you going to do?” Magenta asked Maria after Maria finally got out from the make out session with Anderson and Caplan, who right now were not conversing but instead keeping their eyes on her.

“Look at them. All five of them are way beyond intimidating, and visually a bad idea.”

“I don’t know about that. Visually, they look lethal, like men who have experienced pain, death, war, and a whole lot more. They’re warriors, maybe that’s why they were chosen for you and you were chosen for them,” Magenta told her. Maria glanced up at her.

“What do you mean?”

Magenta glanced around them and then whispered to her.

“Your experience you shared with me. That isn’t something easy to get over, to move on after, but you’re tough, determined, and you’re even doing it alone. I can’t even stand to not have at least one of my men nearby after everything that happened to me. I was never like that. I handled the crap with Andrew and the military, the feds, the training as an agent with strength and purpose.”

“Your men weakened you? Is that what you’re saying?”

Magenta chuckled. “Oh hell yeah, they make me weak, but in good ways, in ways that make me love them so damn much I feel like I can’t breathe without them.” Maria widened her eyes and felt the tears. Magenta covered her hand.

“You’re scared, but you can have that. All the good stuff, to wipe out the bad stuff. Maybe even help them with their bad stuff.”

“Their bad stuff?”

“I’ve overheard some things over the past few months. Chaynce and his team are the real deal, like beyond basic military, beyond Special Forces or any of those usually bad ass titles. They’re like commandos, mercenaries, government operatives all rolled up into one. They are hard, distant, abrupt, commanding, for reasons. If you feel an attraction to them, you’ll have to accept their attitudes.”

“They’re bossy. Like, ‘kiss me now’ bossy,” Maria whispered and Magenta chuckled.

“Did that make you wet? Make you want?” she asked her and Maria worried her bottom lip and a tear almost fell. She looked away.

“Oh, sweetie.”

“Yes, yes, it did and it shouldn’t. How could I want that and with men like them after what I went through?”

“Because they have the power to get you past the fear and the pain. When you tell them what happened to you—”

“No, no, no, I can’t do that. They’ll be turned off, or look at me differently. Right now they see me as some inexperienced schoolteacher.”

“First of all, you’re stunning, and sexy, despite how conservatively you dress. Which, by the way, was the cause of the bar fight. A first for Rock’s in several years, so prepare to be the talk of the town.”

“Oh God. My kids’ parents are going to be concerned.”

Magenta laughed. “I highly doubt that. Not as the truth travels and five big, bad ass sexy military men rescued you from the four young cowboys out to taint your name, and force their lips upon you.
