Hand Pump, Don’t Open?

It is best to use a food grade hand pump to take water out. You should stock up several of these in case one gets contaminated or fails. Motorized pumps are also available, but this is only viably used prior to the doomsday scenario. Opening and closing the lid is not recommended because you increase the chances of contamination.

What Type of Water Should You Store

Most tap water in most first world countries are good for long term storage. Of course, it would be better if you check the acidity of the same (PH). You want a relatively neutral PH of 6 to 7. Water testers can be bought, and it’s relatively cheap, or you can ask your local water filtration plant about ph and chorine levels. If you are unsure of how clean your water is, have your tap water independently tested for bacteriological and chemical requirements by independent laboratories. You can find these in hospitals or clinics.
