CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Egly tingled with anticipation and delight as he followed the figure he had glimpsed in the brightly lit parking lot. The man's silhouette floated on the other side of the space, tantalizingly out of reach, teasing Egly with each step. Egly grinned. Though the other man had yet to notice him, this was no random encounter—it was a reunion.

With Brom Jenkins.

The name echoed in Egly's mind. Brom. So fitting of the broad-shouldered, dour-faced head of Chelsi's security. Her loyal guard dog. A doberman in a silk shirt and slacks.

A sinister grin spread across Egly's face. He was relieved Brom showed up, as he thought his failure in the concert crowd would make him not come.

But there he was. On the opposite side of the parking lot, strolling past a line of Mercedes, BMWs, and Audis, scanning left and right; he hadn't spotted Egly.

As Egly closed the distance between them, he toyed with the idea of calling out to the other man. But he restrained himself for a few moments. He wanted to savor every memory.

Egly continued to walk behind Brom, a few feet back, through the labyrinthine paths of the parking lot. Each footstep was calculated and purposeful, matching Brom's, canceling out the sound. Shadows danced around them from the bright lights above.

Finally, Egly found himself mere yards behind Brom.

He was going to call out to him, but Brom seemed to pick up on his presence. Slowing to a stop, Brom turned around. His stone-cold face and dark eyes met Egly's gaze.

Egly smiled.

"Hey-a, buddy," Egly said.
