Chapter Nine

Three hours later, Jo pulled up her driveway slowly, her eyes wide in shock as mud dripped from what seemed like every surface inside her vehicle. From the back came the sound of a dog’s happy panting.

“I’m insane,” she muttered as she pulled into her normal spot and turned her car off. “Utterly insane.”

She hadn’t meant to come home with the dog today. She hadn’t meant to do anything but go and look at it. But when she got there and saw the poor, bedraggled dog in a muddy pen that her owners refused to let her out of, she had begun to feel a sneaking suspicion that she wouldn’t be going home without the dog. That suspicion solidified into a certainty when she stepped into the pen and the dog came up to her and sat at her feet, her brown eyes wide and her tail wagging slowly in the mud. It was almost as if the dog was asking her to take her home, and Jo hadn’t been able to refuse.

She didn’t regret her choice, but she did regret not thinking ahead and realizing what the combination of a muddy dog and an enclosed vehicle would lead to. It had only taken a few seconds for the dog to shake off in the back of her vehicle, and Jo knew that she was looking forward to hours of cleaning up the aftermath.

“We’re going to start with you, though,” she said, turning back to the dog, who had her nose pressed to the window, her tail wagging and sending tiny droplets of mud flying everywhere. “You don’t look much like a pearl now. More like a dirt clod if you ask me.”

She was sure once the dog was clean, her name, Pearl, would fit her much better. She seemed like a sweet creature so far, but Jo knew that they had a long road ahead of them before they learned to trust each other. She was just going to take it one step at a time, and the first step was getting the dog clean.

She got out of the car, walking around to the side door to let Pearl out, keeping a tight grip on her leash as she did so. She wasn’t sure how the dog would react to the site of the alpacas. Pearl seemed distracted by the new scents and sounds of Jo’s property, but she followed Jo after only a gentle tug with the leash as they walked around to the other side of the vehicle. That was when Jo laid eyes on the barn and realized her error. She had been planning on setting Pearl up inside one of the stalls once she was clean, with a pile of fresh straw to lay in and bowls with fresh water and food, but the police tape was still up, and it had only been a couple of days since she had discovered Jason’s body beneath the hayloft. There was no way she would be able to use the stalls for a while yet.
