Chapter IX

Growing up in the hood has it perks. I remember Eddie and his brothers when they weren’t so polite. They must have mellowed with age. It was safe for me to come out of my hiding spot and walk back to the house. “Hey, cousin – you just missed out on all the fun.” Eddie said laughing the whole time. Everyone in Beaufort knew not to linger in this neighborhood. After a brief reunion with all of my cousins, I gave them a hundred dollars just for handling the trouble. “Alright – Rum and stories are on the way.” Kevin said. Mama called and said she was too tired to cook. She said she would pick up dinner and once I told her who was at the house, she ordered us pizza and decided to visit her sister. Mama knew how rowdy we could get at times.

“Eddie - now that those New York thugs have been handled, I’m gonna have to get back to New York before all hell breaks loose.” I said after the rum had arrived and we had started to partake. “Some punk has set me up to take the fall for two, no three, murders but I got all the information I need to clear me.” “Look here cousin, if you need us to go with you we can tear stuff up like a wrecking ball.” Darrell said obviously drunk at this point. “Thanks for the offer but I’ll have to handle this one myself. Eddie didn’t drink much and promised to take me to the airport for my flight in the morning. Mama showed up shortly after the reunion ended - It was around 10:00 p.m. “Mama, I’ll be leaving early in the morning. I’m sorry that we didn’t get to catch up on this short visit but I’m not going to put you in any danger. I’ll explain everything once this is over.” I said. “Well, as long as it’s at a nice restaurant and on your tab then I’m okay with that” she said smiling.

Once mama had gone to sleep, I started to remember how quiet the house used to be. I could hear the refrigerator humming, the clock ticking and the increasing volume of my thoughts. As I was re-packing my items, I finally had time to go over Jake’s information from that revealing phone call. The coincidence of Jake wanting to get inside the building that Tuesday morning was too much to ignore. The reason was that he never got the blackmail evidence of insider trading after Carson’s murder. That’s what he wanted that morning and he needed me as a shield – we’d appear as the curious workers that wanted to know what happened. Don-Don and his girlfriend were unfortunate tragedies in this scam and their deaths point towards me as the killer. With both of them dead it would be tough to prove my innocence. I would have to make a deal with one devil in order to catch another devil.
