Chapter Fourteen
âI just spoke to Emma, and she said rumors are already flying that you were with Elijah Anderson when he was killed.â Bee unwrapped a stick of gum and stuffed it into his mouth then handed Cass a piece, which she took gratefully, since theyâd just spent the past few hours at the hospital getting patched up and hadnât eaten anything.
Cass stuffed the gum into her mouth and shifted to get more comfortable, then stared out the passenger side window. âI wasnât with him when he was killed, Bee.â
âYeah, well, you know that, and I know that, and you already know from past experience Iâll do everything I can to squash that rumorââ
âAnd it wonât make one bit of difference.â
âExactly.â Bee stopped at a traffic light and looked at her, his eyes filled with sympathy she knew was genuine. âAny time youâre present at a crime scene, the automatic assumption is that the victim told you who killed him, and blah, blah, blah. You know the drill.â
âIf only it were that easy.â She sighed, happy to be developing a good reputation, but at the same time weary with the implications.
When the light changed, with no one behind him, Bee rolled through the intersection. âSo, where to?â
Wasnât that the question. She wanted to get to the local paper and see what she could find in their archives, but that would have to wait until morning since theyâd already closed by now. She wanted to talk to Liam McAlister again, and he was certainly done substituting by now, but chances were heâd be home all tucked up and toasty rather than at the historical society. And she was starved, so a trip to the diner was certainly on the agenda, especially since Stephanie and Aiden had picked Beast up from Mystical Musings earlier and taken him for the night, and Cass was in no rush to go home to an empty house. Sheâd thought of picking Beast up from Stephanie and taking him home, but sheâd never disappoint Aiden like that.
âCass?â Bee had pulled over just before the next intersection to allow a few cars to pass. âDo you know where you want to go?â
She knew Bee had to be starving, for both food and gossip at this point, but he kept his thoughts to himself, which Cass appreciated. âWould you just do me a favor and run past Twin Forks, then we can go to the diner and get something to eat?â
He frowned. âAre you sure you donât just want to go home? Or you could come to my house? We could even stop by at Stephanieâs and see Beast if you want. And Aiden always makes you smile.â
Even the thought of that precious little boy made her smile and her insides go all mushy. âIf I go see Beast, Iâm going to want to take him home with me, and Aiden would be crushed. Besides, I donât want to take a chance of bringing any danger to Stephanieâs door.â
âNo, me neither.
