LANE FOCUSED ON THE pins at the end of the aisle ahead of him. Jett had won the first game, and was bragging non-stop if he wanted to ever hear the end of it he had to make a good showing this time around. Squaring up, he paced out the steps and with perfect form in his opinion let the ball fly down the highly shined floor. Watching and willing the ball into position, his arm aimed high when the strike became reality.

“Awesome,” Rachel said getting in on the celebration with a fist pump in the air.

Clementine high fived him despite the death glare from Jett, he made sure he swaggered past their chairs just a little more pronounced than was necessary. He knew he would need to repeat the performance several times over to beat Jett, but he would relish the little victories in the meantime.

Sitting on a chair two over from Rachel, he swigged his drink and looked toward Clementine now giving her best at adding to her score.

“So, Clementine told me that you run a security business. Like security systems for homes?” Rachel asked looking at him sweetly.

She was a cute blonde, about five foot seven he would guess and she was friendly but not aggressive like Meghan. She had dressed for a more casual date in jeans, a loose shirt and flats. When asked about bowling she had immediately seemed into it, and was giving as good as she got with the group like she had been a part of it for a long time. Without being to quantify the statement, he felt like they could be friends, where that hadn’t seemed possible with Meghan.

“Not exactly. Did Clementine tell you that Jett and I served in the military together?”

“Yes, just in passing.”

“Well, we now subcontract jobs in that capacity and consult on security clearances, and other client needs.”

“Is that what you did in the military?”

“We can’t tell you that,” Jett said coming over to them. “I think you missed that strike,” he said smugly slapping Lane’s shoulder.

“Is that one of those or you would have to kill me things?” Rachel asked kiddingly.

“We just can’t talk about it as we were in a covert branch. I better go get his ego back under control,” he said stepping forward.

He heard her ask Clementine if they were kidding.

Grinning as he heard Clementine confirm their story, he put that out of his mind focused on the task ahead.

One additional strike latter, he took up his position next to Rachel.

“You sure you don’t want to try again?”

“I’m thinking not, I twisted that ankle good the first game. I’m sorry I’m such a poor help for your team.”

“Nothing doing, I can handle Jett.”

“So, you have a two year old daughter?” She asked tuning back in to him, obvious interest in her eyes.

“Sophie, will be two in September.”

“I was sorry to hear about your wife. I remember when all that was in the news last year, it was horrible,” she said with genuine empathy on her face.
