AFTER TREATING RYKER to silence throughout the morning chores and then refusing to acknowledge his presence during the first three children’s lessons, Darby was ashamed to admit that she was acting like a spoiled child. She had been shocked to hear her parents discussing the situation about their retirement the night before, and all he had tried to do was help. She could also acknowledge that it wasn’t just the fear of living without her parents nearby, having to completely run the business on her own that was bothering her, but the fact that Ryker would soon be leaving that was weighing heavy on her.

Bolstering her courage, she set off toward the riding pen to make amends with Ryker.

“Hey,” she said, coming up behind him.

“You talking to me?” he turned with a grin.

“Did you just make a joke, Mr. Jameson?”

“Maybe. So you better?”

“Kind of. Sorry about this morning.”

“It’s all good, I figured you just needed time to work it out in your head.”

“I did. I am going to see my financial advisor and lawyer today after the last lesson.”

“I can ride along, if you want a second opinion. I understand if that information is something you don’t want me to have....”

“Ryker...I’d love a second opinion.”

“Ok then.” She saw him turn as the mini-van pulled up.

“Your biggest fan is here,” she teased.

“He’s a good kid. Glad he is starting to talk a bit,” he said, putting the shovel he held against the barn and pulling off his work gloves.

Tyler had a lesson late the week before, and had not let Ryker out of his sight. He would saddle up and get on a horse without hesitation, through a simple nod from Ryker.

Before the door was fully opened, the little boy came barreling out of the vehicle.

“Good Morning, Tyler,” Darby said.

There was no response as he ran to stand next to Ryker.

“Say Good Morning to Ms. McAllister,” Ryker said gently.

“Morning, Miz McAllister,” Tyler said in a whisper.

She couldn’t help but grin at the pair. Ryker should have scared the wits out of the little guy, due to his imposing size. That was not the case. Tyler definitely had a bit of hero worship going on there.

“Why don’t you get your helmet, and then help me saddle Sugar Baby?” Ryker asked the boy.

With a slight nod, he took off to do as requested.

“He really loves coming out here,” Mrs. Shelton said, walking over to stand next to Darby.

“Yes, but I don’t think it’s my charming personality that won him over though,” she inclined her head to Ryker.

“Yeah, I’ve never seen him take to anyone like that...and I’ve worked with him off and on since birth. He seems to be warming up to you too, I think.”

“I thought he was just found this past year?”

“Unfortunately, he had been in care as an infant and his mom did everything right to get him back. We are now in the process of terminating her parental rights, as she will be incarcerated in federal prison for the next ten to fifteen years.
