Chapter Ten

Belle let out a long, slow breath and kissed the skin directly over his heart. She could feel his pulse against her lips. Together. She didn’t expect him to say anything different, but it was still a relief to hear him confirm it. They were together. A couple. Lovers. In love.

No, he hadn’t said that. And neither had she...at least not out loud. But she was falling in love with Jack. She was sure of it. This wasn’t some childish crush. It was more than her seeing her friends and family falling happily in love and thinking, I want that. This was a feeling she’d never had before. She shuddered.

“Hey,” Jack said softly. “Are you cold? Grab the blankets, babe.”

“You keep me warm enough.” She grinned up at him as his eyes fell closed. “Is it just me, or does it feel like we’ve been together forever? Everything feels so normal between us.”

He opened one eye. “There is nothing normal about us. What we just did was way better than normal.”

“I’m not talking about that, you perv. I’m talking about the way we’re so comfortable with each other. It doesn’t feel like any other relationship I’ve been in. None of the awkward feeling that I have to be on my best behavior all the time. And I don’t get the feeling that you’re trying to impress me...” She raised her head and laughed, stopping his objection. “Except in bed, of course. You’re very impressive there.

“I mean the way we talk with each other.” She tried to think of a way to describe it. “It’s natural. Organic. Like we belong, you know?”

“Yeah, I guess. We fit together nicely.” He looked down at her. “And I’m not talking about sex.” His eyes went to the Ansel Adams prints on the wall. “You know my taste. I like those.”

She knew she’d taken a big chance with her shopping spree that afternoon. But the room felt firmly in the twenty-first century now. Callum had loaned Jack a work crew last week to pull up the mauve carpeting in the great room to reveal the wood floor beneath, and they’d removed the mirrored tiles from the wall, too.

“I’m glad you like the prints. I probably shouldn’t have sprung it on you like I did, but I thought...” She paused, unsure about confessing the reasoning behind her shopping spree. It was more than a day of retail therapy. She’d had a goal in mind.

“Thought what? That it would be easier to beg forgiveness than permission?”

She chuckled, resting her chin on his chest to look into his warm, dark eyes. “Well, that did cross my mind, but I did this for you. I thought maybe if the place felt more like home that you’d be able to relax here. Be less stressed.” Stop having nightmares.

“What do you mean stressed?” She saw the answer dawn in his eyes, which quickly cooled. “Are you talking about last night? Belle...”

“I thought a warmer, cozier surrounding might help your anxiety.”

“Anxiety?” He sat higher, and she was forced to release her hold on him.
