‘Do I look all right? I’m trying to breathe in and keep my figure. I know she’ll expect me to be wearing a corset, but I haven’t any.’ Meg looked at herself in the mirror and wished that she owned a set of corsets to make her figure look waspish, like all the ladies of fashion.

‘Lord’s sake, Meg! She’s not the Queen. What does it matter what you look like?’ Then Sarah saw the panic on her sister’s face. ‘You look perfect,’ she said, more gently. ‘You always do – apart from when you are black-leading the oven and fireplace.’

‘I haven’t any of that on me, have I?’ Meg looked down at her long black skirt and white cuffed blouse and sighed with relief when she couldn’t find any smudges.

‘I’ll never get this upset at ever seeing anyone, of that I’m sure,’ Sarah laughed.

There was a knock at the back door. It was the coach driver that Frankie had sent.

‘Go on, then – your carriage awaits. All the row will be watching you from behind their windows, wondering where you are off to now. Mrs McEvoy will be breaking her neck peering from behind her net curtains. Having a carriage pick you up is one up on owning a tea service.’

Sarah grinned and watched as her sister reached for her small posy bag. ‘Just be you and stand up to the old bag if she tries to pull you down. We are as good as anybody.’

‘I’m dreading this. If Frankie doesn’t get on with her, then I’m not about to. I know now that she’ll not think me good enough for him.’ Meg put her bag on her wrist and opened the door to the driver of the hansom cab.

‘Don’t be daft. Enjoy your afternoon!’

‘Thank you, I’ll try.’ Meg followed the driver out to the carriage that was about to take her to meet the woman who would decide her future.
