Chapter 7.
Kate did not get much sleep that night and woke up with the realization that she needed to go back home, back to live an Amish life. She knew it would be hard to see Benjamin, but it was something she had to do if her life was to ever be meaningful.
The last four years of her life had been spent not facing reality. The reality was that Benjamin was already married to Lydia and there was nothing she could do about it. Running away had not eased the pain, so Kate considered that she might as well go back home where she belonged.
Kate had not felt bad about leaving home because her older sister, Annie, and younger sister, Sarah, were there to do the chores and tend the animals. If she had been the only child or perhaps one of only two children she would have had a duty to stay and help out.
She would miss Rebecca and the lively conversations that they had across the sewing table every day. She would even miss her miniscule apartment that she had fixed into a proper home for herself as best she could.
Kate propped herself up onto one elbow in her bed and looked around at her apartment. It had already been furnished with a bed, a dressing table, two bedside tables and a larger table and four chairs, before she moved in, and there wasnât much more furniture that would be able to fit into the small apartment. Kate made it like home by making a large quilt for her bed, much like the quilt she had at home that her groosmammi had made.
The building itself was over a hundred years old as was evident in the wide floorboards that were made out of pine and lovingly polished to a high sheen. There was a small window, which opened on to the busy street below where Kate would spend a great deal of time watching folk hurrying to and fro. The walls were wallpapered in a scroll and floral pattern, which had taken Kate some time to get used to, as the walls at her home were all plain, and of pale hues.
Today would be the day, Kate decided, to tell Rebecca of her plans. She knew that Rebecca would not be pleased.
