The rock was wet and slippery against Weylyn’s grasp. The Lagnh Sea roared, splashing waves against the side of the cliff, and the sunlight beat down from the sky, unrelenting and cruel. But he had suffered fates far crueler than this, so it did not bother him quite like it bothered the others.

He found a firm hold and began to climb up higher. He was not sure if the smallest castle was where the Elemental Fae was, but it was closest, and they would start there. Besides, just beyond the edge of the cliffs there were trees and bushes, greenery they could hide behind instead of being out in the open and under the blind eye of human soldiers like at the market.

This plan was better than walking through the city. All they’d had to do was veer down to the beach and follow the coast up to the rocky cliff side. The rest was smooth climbing from there.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” Clay cursed from his side.

Weylyn chanced a look in that direction and smirked as Clay nearly slipped. “Having trouble, Lord Valentino?” he mocked. He couldn’t help himself. Clay was so fun to tease.

“Mana save me, you’re like a fucking spider,” Clay retorted breathlessly.

“I’m just very good at climbing.” To prove a point, he went up, up… Then looked down with a smirk at the other Fae. They were all breathing heavily and carefully maneuvering their way up. Clay though looked green.

“Show off!” he called out.

“Do not worry yourself unnecessarily, Clay. If you fall, I will catch you.”

The others blinked up at him as though surprised by his easy banter with the other Fae. Weylyn just smirked. Let them wonder what his true mask was. They would never guess it, never know. Besides, it was so easy to speak with the other Fae rather than the others. Ever since they’d nearly died together at Castle Aileach. The both of them had been trapped on a ledge, looking at a chasm of chaos below. Something about the prospect of your own imminent demise seemed to bring people together. In this case, it made them more susceptible to teasing than ever before.

“If I fall, I’m taking you with me, asshole,” he grumbled.

Weylyn’s laugh was drowned out by the crashing waves. The rest of the way was made in silence. Weylyn reached the top first, jumping over the edge of the cliff with nimble feet and landing in a crouch. He rolled, scooting and hiding behind the shrubbery and waited for the others so they could do the same.

Up close, the veritable castle gleamed against the sunlight. The pillars shone as if made from polished porcelain and chips of alabaster. Servants milled about on the grounds, cutting through grass and sand, walking beneath wisteria plants carrying baskets of foods and laundry.

“Well?” Iona demanded in his ear, her voice harsh.

He turned to meet her icy gaze with a stony one of his own. Iona despised him. She’d proven so by breaking his nose, though that had been more to keep his mouth shut regarding her treachery rather than actual hatred.
