Chapter Nine

Hello. Watson. Congratulations!”

“Holmes! What are you doing here?

“Where else should I be, old fellow? Gaining first-hand knowledge of the proceedings was the logical way for me to be ready to step out and take whatever actions might have been necessary to sway things in our direction. Although I was sure Doyle’s testimony would take the wind out of Parsons’s sails. He deserves your thanks.”

I crossed my arms and cocked my head at my old friend. “It was Doyle’s re-writes that caused all this trouble. You complain about my romanticising your adventures. He nearly got us arrested with his literary license!”

“Agreed, but in the end he laid his reputation on the line to come to our defence.”

Mason chimed in, “Yes, but I believe he, and both of you, have made a powerful enemy today. Parsons will certainly hold a grudge and be waiting for another opportunity to pounce.”

Holmes smiled, “You are aware of Chaucer’s saying about people living in glass houses not throwing stones?”

“Of course,” replied the barrister. “Advice I’ve given several of my clients over the years.”

“Well, the glass walls of Parsons’s life are not so tinted as he believes. They proved especially vulnerable to one Henry Fletcher who has an unfortunate habit of selling information to persons less scrupulous than himself.”

“What have you done, Holmes?” I enquired.

“Let us just say that Mr. Parsons will be forced to relinquish his position of power for the foreseeable future with a devastating case of hypocrisy.”

We all chortled at that remark. My friend then gave me even better news.

“Now, pack up your belongings, Doctor! I have a cab standing by for you to make a house call on one Victor John, your grandson!”
