Chapter 19
Natava gazed apprehensively at the imposing dark forest before her, uncertain of what to make of it. While the sun had replenished her, the foreboding presence of the forest filled her with unease. It felt as though an evil darkness loomed over the place, a silent warning of death to anyone who dared to venture in. She turned slowly, observing Erars as he tied the horse to a nearby tree. He wore a faint smile as he approached, his eyes fixed on the forest. It was clear that he relished the sight, which wasnât surprising considering his love for darkness.
âShall we?â he asked.
âI would rather not,â Natava replied.
âNo? Are you already tired?â
âI donât like this,â Natava said, taking a few steps back and shaking her head as she looked at the menacing forest.
âScared? I thought you said you werenât scared,â he taunted.
âThis is different. Donât you feel it?â
âI do. It feels great,â he countered.
âItâs dark, and itâs a death trap,â she snapped.
âNothing will touch you, Light. I will make sure of it,â he assured her.
He regarded the forest as if it were a pleasant place for a leisurely stroll. Natava shook her head, but Erars crossed the border and entered the forest.
âBetter hurry, Light. Iâm not waiting,â he said.
Natava cursed under her breath, telling him to go rot, but she hastened after him, aware that he wouldnât let her escape. He would catch up to her, and it was wiser to stay close to him as they entered the forest.
âItâs... not good,â she whispered.
âItâs great,â he countered.
âNo, this feels wrong, and the stories about this place are not good.â
âYou canât believe everything you hear.â
Natava turned to look at Erars, who appeared strangely calm. It confused her. While she understood that he thrived in darkness, she also knew that other creatures might find him to be a delightful meal.
âThere are giant snakes here,â she said.
âThere are. And spiders too. Theyâre quite repulsive,â he chuckled.
âThey devour people.â
âThey do.â
âAnd there are other things as well. Evil spirits that haunt you,â she said.
âLittle Light, I didnât expect you to be such a believer. You seem too stubborn for that,â he teased, glancing at her and smiling.
She glared at him, but then the sound of a snapping branch caused her to jump to the side, colliding with Erars, who stumbled backwards slightly before steadying them both. Natava pressed her back against him, peering towards the source of the sound. Erars noticed that she had begun to emit a soft glow, though he wasnât sure if she had noticed it herself.
âDid you hear that?â she asked.
âYes, a branch snapped,â he replied dryly.
âAnd what caused it?â
âPerhaps a spider coming to devour us,â he leaned closer and whispered.
âYouâre not funny,â she snarled, turning to him and realising how close they were standing.
He smiled at her, and she quickly moved back, creating some distance between them.
âWe should be careful,â she said.
âWe are careful.â
âNo, weâre wandering around as if weâre strolling through a garden,â she retorted.
âItâs quite pleasant here.â
âItâs creepy.
