Chapter 19

Natava gazed apprehensively at the imposing dark forest before her, uncertain of what to make of it. While the sun had replenished her, the foreboding presence of the forest filled her with unease. It felt as though an evil darkness loomed over the place, a silent warning of death to anyone who dared to venture in. She turned slowly, observing Erars as he tied the horse to a nearby tree. He wore a faint smile as he approached, his eyes fixed on the forest. It was clear that he relished the sight, which wasn’t surprising considering his love for darkness.

“Shall we?” he asked.

“I would rather not,” Natava replied.

“No? Are you already tired?”

“I don’t like this,” Natava said, taking a few steps back and shaking her head as she looked at the menacing forest.

“Scared? I thought you said you weren’t scared,” he taunted.

“This is different. Don’t you feel it?”

“I do. It feels great,” he countered.

“It’s dark, and it’s a death trap,” she snapped.

“Nothing will touch you, Light. I will make sure of it,” he assured her.

He regarded the forest as if it were a pleasant place for a leisurely stroll. Natava shook her head, but Erars crossed the border and entered the forest.

“Better hurry, Light. I’m not waiting,” he said.

Natava cursed under her breath, telling him to go rot, but she hastened after him, aware that he wouldn’t let her escape. He would catch up to her, and it was wiser to stay close to him as they entered the forest.

“It’s... not good,” she whispered.

“It’s great,” he countered.

“No, this feels wrong, and the stories about this place are not good.”

“You can’t believe everything you hear.”

Natava turned to look at Erars, who appeared strangely calm. It confused her. While she understood that he thrived in darkness, she also knew that other creatures might find him to be a delightful meal.

“There are giant snakes here,” she said.

“There are. And spiders too. They’re quite repulsive,” he chuckled.

“They devour people.”

“They do.”

“And there are other things as well. Evil spirits that haunt you,” she said.

“Little Light, I didn’t expect you to be such a believer. You seem too stubborn for that,” he teased, glancing at her and smiling.

She glared at him, but then the sound of a snapping branch caused her to jump to the side, colliding with Erars, who stumbled backwards slightly before steadying them both. Natava pressed her back against him, peering towards the source of the sound. Erars noticed that she had begun to emit a soft glow, though he wasn’t sure if she had noticed it herself.

“Did you hear that?” she asked.

“Yes, a branch snapped,” he replied dryly.

“And what caused it?”

“Perhaps a spider coming to devour us,” he leaned closer and whispered.

“You’re not funny,” she snarled, turning to him and realising how close they were standing.

He smiled at her, and she quickly moved back, creating some distance between them.

“We should be careful,” she said.

“We are careful.”

“No, we’re wandering around as if we’re strolling through a garden,” she retorted.

“It’s quite pleasant here.”

“It’s creepy.
