Chapter Eight

A SAVIOR WHO

OFFERS PEACE

“Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God

through our Lord Jesus Christ.” —Romans 5:1

I was in Kansas City, Missouri, and I was preaching in a juicy revival. Folks were being saved and we were having a great time shouting, “Amen! Hallelujah!” At the close of a service a girl came to me and said, “Reverend, I have a sister who has joined the Black Panther party, and she is a militant part of it. I want you to pray for her.”

And I said, “Why don’t you see if she will come to church?”

“Oh, she would never do that!” I said, “Well, let’s pray about it and ask her anyway.” And so the closing night I saw—just before I got up to preach—a girl come in and sit in the back row. She acted hostile. Somehow I was just led to believe that was her.

And after I got through preaching she got in line with all the other people, and she came up to me. She said, “Because of my sister I came and I’ve listened to you for more than an hour and a half. And I want you to know that you said nothing relevant. You said nothing that would bring deliverance to my people. I think you are a fraud. I think you are someone who needs to be done away with!”

Since the other people were trying to shake my hand, I said to her, “Well, why don’t you just stand aside a moment and let me get some more kisses and hugs, and I’ll deal with you later.”

And so she did. And I said, “Now, come in the room here.” We went into the room and got on this one-to-one relationship. And I said, “I want to ask you ….” Before I could complete my thought she began again to berate me and down the church and condemn our cause—and I just listened to her and prayed. Sometimes that’s all you can do.

And then the Lord opened a wide door. She said, “By the way, you tried to get me to accept Christ. You kept beckoning for me and asking me to accept Christ. I saw you.”

I said, “Yes, I had you in mind.”

She said, “Well, I want to ask you a question.” And I was praying, because I didn’t know how much of a Black Panther she was. And then all of a sudden, the Spirit of the Lord brought it out. She said, “If I had accepted Jesus, what would I have now?” That’s a door wide open. In other words, what do you have when you have Jesus?

I said, “Now, you asked me, so you must let me answer.”

Then she proceeded to try to help me. “Will I have my bills paid for? Will I have a split-level home? Will I have two cars in my garage? Will I have a mink stole? Will Whitey get up off my neck?”

I said to her, “I can’t promise all that. Now I don’t know too many of us who have Jesus who have all of that.
