Chapter Eight

The strange encounter with Hector stuck with Jo as she drove home, and she decided to see if Harper was over at Rose’s. The last thing she wanted to do was dredge up bad feelings, but Hector had given her a name, and if something about the encounter could help bring Violet’s killer to justice, it would be worth it.

She pulled into her neighbor’s driveway instead of her own a few minutes later and was glad to see Harper’s familiar car parked near Rose’s front porch. When she stepped out of her vehicle, the delicious scent of something sweet baking filled her nose, and a gurgle in her stomach reminded her that she hadn’t eaten since a light and early lunch before she went into the yarn shop.

Harper pulled the door open at her knock and welcomed her inside. “Rose is just finishing up an apple pie. Perfect timing.”

“I actually stopped by to talk to you, but if there’s apple pie up for grabs, I might be able to stay for a bit longer.”

“We have about five minutes before it comes out of the oven. Is that enough time to talk? Is it about Violet?”

“Yes to both,” Jo said. She gestured at the couch and the two of them sat down. “I had the strangest encounter after work today. Someone named Hector—”

Harper cut her off. “Hector Pringle?”

“Yes. I take it you know him?”

“He’s the ex I was talking about,” Harper said, her eyes wide. “What did he want? What did he say?”

“Well, for one thing, he called himself Violet’s boyfriend. Is it possible they got back together without you knowing?”

Harper shook her head. “No. No way. He was cheating on her with some mystery girl. He wouldn’t tell her who after she found out, and she ended things then and there. As far as I know, she blocked his number on her phone too. She wanted nothing to do with him. She had more self-respect than to get back together with someone who was sleeping around. Hector was lying.”

Jo couldn’t find it in her to disbelieve Harper. Hector’s behavior had been so strange, so not in line with how she would expect a grieving loved one to act, that him being the one lying about their relationship was the only thing that made sense.

“Well, he was very concerned about whether or not Violet had any friends over while she was there,” she said. “He mentioned a name. Jaqueline or Jackie Roberts. The description he gave of her car seemed to match the vehicle you saw.”

Harper nodded slowly. “I’ve met Jackie once or twice. She and Violet are old friends, they grew up together, but she never really spent much time hanging out with Violet’s college friends. I don’t know her that well. I certainly don’t know why Hector would be asking after her.”

“He was very concerned about figuring out whether or not she had been there,” Jo said. “I have no idea why.”

“I… I do have Jackie’s number. Violet used my phone to call her once.
