CHAPTER 13

Jesse tried to brace himself for meeting his double, but nothing could prepare him for the person he actually met. The other Jesse’s face seemed younger, though he knew that was impossible. He didn’t have any scars on his neck, or lines around his eyes. The frames of his glasses were thin, and his eyes were a bright blue, open, honest. Without guile. It felt like looking in a mirror and seeing a man who had never existed.

He was accompanied by a very tall, very handsome man. David Brighton. His head was clean-shaven, and his chocolate toned skin was flawless. He had an easy smile, and he didn’t even bat a lash when Grace introduced the four of them, as though meeting his boyfriend’s double, and said double’s vampire lover was a regular occurrence. Or maybe he just had manners. Dominique took one look at David and got a goofy little smile that made Jesse uncomfortable. Yes, David was worth a second look. No, Dominique shouldn’t have been looking.

Jesse and David had shown up just as Grace was setting the table, and she ushered everybody into the dining room to begin eating. Both Jesse and David looked perplexed when Gideon dug into his plate of shepherd’s pie, but if they had any questions, they didn’t raise them over the meal. Jesse was grateful for that, because he wanted to enjoy his mother’s wonderful meal in peace.

He made food worthy of most restaurants. But nothing ever could touch the wonderful flavor of Grace’s shepherd’s pie. He was lost in the taste, in the texture against his tongue, in the endless memories that the first whiff evoked. He wondered if Gideon appreciated how great this meal truly was. He wondered if Dominique appreciated it—she probably did. She, of all people, should appreciate a home-cooked meal. Michelle was hardly domestic.

But more than anything, Jesse wished Emma was there to share that moment. She would have taken everything in stride. She would have been happy to meet his mother. She would have rested her hand on his knee when she sensed he was overwhelmed. She would have sent him wave after wave of good feelings, of love, of warmth. He knew he shouldn’t dwell on that, but a part of him very much wanted his mother—even if she wasn’t his mother—to know Emma.

Jesse tried to push those thoughts out of his mind. They were killing his appetite, and he needed to eat. He needed to keep up his strength, because he had had a long day, and he sensed that he would have a very long night.

Conversation was light and casual, nothing earth-shattering as Grace steered them toward safe topics like the weather, and recent books she’d acquired, and even British and American politics when the books discussion got a trifle heated. It was David
