Chapter 22

Mad Dog

“You sure this is the place?”

Mad Dog gave his partner an irritated glance. “No, I picked it at random.” The hulking biker shook his head. They had been given their instructions by e-mail and their down payment by Paypal. “Now keep your eyes peeled. This guy should be coming out any minute.”

“How do we know that?” Mikey asked. Mikey wasn’t happy about the lack of details regarding this job. Then again, he was called Mikey because he didn’t like anything. The bald biker was almost as big as Mad Dog and showed more ink, his tattoos running down both arms almost to the wrist.

“Because it’s the intel the client gave us.” Mad Dog tried not to sound exasperated. Mikey was an old friend and his most reliable partner-in-crime. “We make sure this guy is the Druid, and we grab him, stuff him in the van, and take him to the place the client told us.”

“What the fuck is a druid? Is it like Merlin or Gandalf?” Mikey scowled. “Sounds like some stupid nerd bullshit.”

Mad Dog bit back a retort. Mikey was a real estate agent who covered his tats with long sleeves and played fantasy sports when he wasn’t hanging out with fellow bikers. The nerd dig seemed ironic coming from a guy who crunched numbers for fun. “It’s some sort of hippy priest, which means he should be a pushover.”

“Is that him?” Mikey actually managed not to point, using his eyes to direct Mad Dog.

Mad Dog followed Mikey’s gaze. The guy matched the description, vague as it was, and was coming from the right place. The briefing had warned the target might have allies in the immediate area, but he looked alone at the moment. The middle-aged man appeared to be distracted. That was perfect as far as Mad Dog was concerned. He gestured for Mikey to follow him as they broke cover from their lookout spot.

“You the Druid?” Mad Dog waited until they were almost on top of the distracted man before asking.

The man looked up, confused for a moment, juggling books and car keys. “Why yes, I’m a druid. In fact, I’m the senior druid for the Middle Illinois territory.”

Mikey swooped in from the druid’s other side. “Sounds like the right guy to me.” Mikey grabbed his arm. “And I hate to be wrong.”

“What’s this about?” the druid asked. He began to protest as they hauled him into the white van. Mad Dog slugged the guy in the gut to knock the wind out of him before he had the presence of mind to yell. The middle-aged man doubled over and wheezed. Mikey shoved him the rest of the way in, then climbed into the van.

Mad Dog took a quick look around as he circled to the driver’s door of the van. No one seemed to be paying attention. Good. This job seemed pretty risky, grabbing a guy in the middle of the day, but looked clear.

“Get his cell phone.” Mad Dog said as he climbed into the driver’s seat and fired up the van.
