Chapter Eighteen

The long dirt road drive to Danika’s RV on a hot and incredibly humid evening felt like an empty stretch of deserted highway in the middle of the night. Danika gripped the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles turned white. She tried to soothe her nerves by focusing on the sound of her truck’s tires spinning up the gravel road, but the atoms of her body were wholly tuned to the woman sitting next to her in the passenger seat, a mere few inches away. They did not speak. The talking Danika wanted to do had nothing at all to do with words but had everything to do with her mouth.

She tried to keep her mind from racing to all the uncertainty about these new and intense feelings, and about her growing anxiety over Finn seeing her naked. She thought about keeping the lights off. Pitch dark might be better, but then she wouldn’t be able to see Finn and that, somehow, seemed much more important than her own flagging body confidence. Danika put the gear into park and turned off the engine. She leaned back in her seat. She had no idea what to say and found herself locked in compression while her mind raced. If someone told her four months ago that she would be sitting in a pickup truck in front of her new RV with a beautiful woman by her side that she desperately wanted to make love to – and the feelings seemed to be mutual – she would’ve laughed her ass off.

Danika must’ve chuckled out loud because Finn’s voice shocked her back into her awkward reality. “What’s funny?” Finn asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“This is unlike me.”

What is?” Finn pressed, turning to face Danika.

“All of this. The RV, this place, you here with me. That cooking class. If you had met me a few months ago,” Danika paused and shook her head, looking for the right words. “I don’t think the impression would have been memorable in a good way.” Danika put the truck in park and turned off the engine.

Finn leaned closer. “I doubt that,” she stated simply as if it was the most natural thing in the world to be sitting like this feeling what was passing unsaid between them while every nerve in Danika’s body bucked and kicked. “Are you going to invite me inside?” Finn asked, more of a statement tone than a question. Danika didn’t look up to meet Finn’s that had turned dark like coffee in an instant. Danika cleared her throat and stared down at her hands.

“I didn’t take you for someone this shy,” said Finn as she rested her left hand on Danika’s right knee. Every muscle in Danika’s leg constricted. “It’s been. A long time,” stammered Danika.

“Let’s go slow. Why don’t we start by getting out of the truck? I think that’s safe, don’t you?” Finn asked as if coaxing a child off a ladder. Danika wasn’t clear why Finn seemed so confident after her hesitation the other night.
