Chapter 8

"What is it?" Mary asked me, after noticing the shift in my focus.

I swallowed. I truly hated this gifting of mine. The raven was never kind to me or the people I met. I liked Mary and her father. I didn't know Georgie at all. But he seemed sweet enough. I didn't want anyone to lose their life or have their life turned upside down by losing someone they loved.

Normally, after a bird sighting, I'd get a clue. A song, a movie, a book, something from pop culture that hinted at the trauma to come. In the last town, it had been songs over the speakers at work. But the diner didn't play songs with words. So there wasn't anything for me to go on.

Other than the fact that time was ticking away. No victim had ever lasted past twenty four hours, in my experience. I really, really hoped I was far away from the motel when the egg timer of fate chimed for Georgie and Mary.

Georgie ignored my sudden sullenness. He answered my previous question. I was grateful for the distraction.

"I was a bit of a wild child last time I was here," Georgie explained. "I nearly burned down the cabin my crew and I were staying in."

"But James didn't seem to recognize you or your crew at breakfast. Not even at dinner," I stated.

"Oh, he remembers them," Mary said. "He called me as soon as he had finished helping you with your car. He told me to steer clear of the lot."

"But then he went home and left you to your own devices," I pointed out.

"Yes," Mary paused. "Except he sent me with you."

"I'm your chaperone?" I put a hand to my chest.

"Unwittingly, yes, I guess."

Georgie pulled Mary deeper into his embrace. He gazed into her eyes. “I used to be a lot of things. Until Mary taught me better.”

“In letters? Like paper and pen letters?” I asked.

“Emails. Phone calls. Any way we could connect, we did,” Georgie added.

“Don’t you think running from her dad, without telling him about the two of you, will solidify his belief that you’re a bad seed?”

Georgie pulled away from Mary. He brushed her cheek with the index finger of his right hand. “I’ve been thinking that over,” he said, more to her than to me. “Penny is right. We’ve got to tell your Dad, together. Maybe even invite him to the ceremony. Secrets are no way to start a marriage.”

Mary leapt from the dryer and flung herself at Georgie. “You’re serious? Really?” Teardrops flowed freely down her cheeks. “I’d been asking God for this. You’re sure? You’re ready to tell him about us? Face to face?”

Georgie wiped Mary’s tears away. “I’m willing to live here with your Dad, if it means I get to have a happily ever after with you.”

The two kissed. This time I turned away. Happily ever after wasn’t exactly in their future. Not with the raven hovering around them. Not unless ever after was the next twelve or so hours.
