Chapter Six

Kael was alive! His blue eyes were wide as he stared at me. They looked panic, but he made no other motion. He didn’t get up, didn’t freak out. Kael lay on the ground staring up at me with his breath becoming heavier. “What do I do?” I asked in a whisper. The creature’s legs squeezed Kael tighter, and he hissed out a sharp breath. His lips opened, trembling. How could a man so strong be rendered so helpless? “I don’t know what to do!”

Kael looked at me, then my gun, and then back to me.

“I am not going to shot you.” Never. I couldn’t. There was no way I could bring myself to point the weapon at him. I held the gun back up, wiping the tear from my cheek. It wasn’t over yet. Kael was still alive, and I would stop at nothing to save him. I placed the tip of the gun on the creature’s scaly blue skin. One deep breath later, I pulled the trigger.

The creature made a shrieking sound and reared back, its legs gripping tighter. The ends were claw-like things that began to dig into Kael’s skin. I took aim toward its head, the fangs covered in gooey clear liquid. I hit the trigger again. The thin line of laser blasted from the gun and pierced the creature’s hard-shelled skin. The head exploded, sending chunks of alien insect all over Kael and myself. I flinched, pulling away until the rain of decay stopped.

“Sam.” It was Kael’s voice. Soft, almost unrecognizable.

I reached toward him, pulling the fangs from his neck and throwing them behind me. The legs were still attached so I started to peel them off his body. The wound wasn’t bleeding much despite looking like big chunks of his skin were missing. Kael was breathing slowly now, his eyes at half-mast. “Don’t you die on me,” I said with conviction. We couldn’t exactly stay out in the open. I was the only one on defense, and I nearly missed hitting the stationary creature right in front of me. The ruins were close, and there was a partially exposed building. I shoved the gun in the crook of my armpit, squeezing it to keep it in place. Then I hooked my arms under his and began dragging Kael toward the entrance. My muscles were burning. Kael was so much bigger than I, and I wasn’t exactly bulging with muscles. I gasped for breath as we neared the entrance. Kael was breathing easier and after checking his pulse, I checked the room. It was dark, four walls and a floor with scattered dirt and dead leaves. It would have to do. I needed to get him somewhere safe.

It took another five minutes of grunting and straining before I had Kael inside the building. I laid him on the floor in the corner. The wound had stopped bleeding. I was taking that as a good sign. He seemed to be sleeping, but I was no doctor.
