En Route to Motorcade

Mexico City, Mexico

Niner, perched in the scoop of the loader, pressed into one corner, Spock in the other, as Atlas continued to guide them toward the roadblock preventing the motorcade from proceeding. He fired two more rounds, taking out another hostile. The closer they got to the scene, the heavier the resistance. Jimmy was lying on the roof, prone, covering their sixes. They were only a couple of minutes out. One more turn. But Control had indicated the way ahead was only worse.

The thunder of helicopter rotors overwhelmed the area and Niner smiled as an Apache banked around a building ahead, its cannons blazing as it shredded the ground-level facades and cars parked in front of him, eliminating at least a dozen of the opposition facing them. The Apache raced past then banked hard, pulling an impressive 180, reminding Niner of one of his favorite eighties action movies, Blue Thunder.

The Apache made a second pass, this time taking out the opposite side of the street as Atlas continued guiding them inexorably toward their destination. The Apache disappeared around another building, its rotors falling almost silent, though the gunfire continued out of sight as it cleared a path down the road they were about to take.

Niner stretched an arm out toward their turn and glanced over his shoulder at Atlas. “Next left! Next left!”

Atlas gave a thumbs-up but maintained their speed, not willing to give up even a second. More bullets pinged off the bucket they were using for cover, and Spock cursed.

“I’m beginning to get the distinct impression that somebody’s unhappy about what we did the other night.”

Niner gave him a look. “Ya think?”

“I do,” said Spock, playing the straight man. He popped up, firing several rounds before ducking back down. “You do realize this is never going to end.”

Niner fired as Atlas turned. Spock was right. The cartels had proven what they were capable of with the Night of Reckoning, but now they were proving how far they were willing to go to get what they wanted. They wanted their people released, and he couldn’t see the president being willing to give in. Taking all the cartel leaders at once had been a bold and impressive move, but in hindsight, foolish. It forced all the cartels to react at once. It united them in their cause. If they had only taken one of the leaders, the other cartels might have gone to war to take over his turf. It could have caused chaos while they put a show trial on back home.

Unfortunately, what should or shouldn’t have happened would be left to the historians. Those left suffering today by the bad decisions of politicians would have to figure a way out of it. If enough time passed, those filling in for their imprisoned bosses might decide they enjoyed having power, and simply leave their former chiefs to rot in prison and stand down their response. After all, violence like this wasn’t good for business. But
