Chapter 25

Juliette walked up to the pale pink door of the cottage in Seapocket Lane after dropping Maggie off for a sleepover. The last thing she felt like doing was going out but the surgery Christmas party was always fun and she knew that once she got there she’d enjoy herself. Plus it was in the Italian restaurant in Seafolly Bay and the taxis were all booked and paid for so there was no brain power required for her at all. All she really needed to do was turn up.

She went slowly up to the top floor, had a shower and put her dressing gown on and carefully wound her hair into large Velcro rollers. Once it was all set on the top of her head she sprayed it with product, put her slippers on and padded back down the stairs, opened the fridge and took out some brie and sliced off a thick hunk of sourdough.

She poured herself a very small glass of sparkling water, replied to a text from Bella and checked her schedule for her visits the next day.

Just as she was finishing off tucking into the brie there was a loud thumping on the front door. She almost jumped out of her skin and dropped the knife and the brie onto the plate. Slipping her feet into her pink fluffy slippers she walked through the middle room and over to the left behind the sofa so whoever it was couldn’t see there was anyone inside but she could see out.

The thumping went again. And then it turned into a more frantic knocking. Then she heard a male voice, Luke’s male voice. ‘Crap! Now what shall I do?’

‘Luke?’ Juliette called out.

‘Yeah, it’s me. Look I need you, Juliette,’ he called through the letterbox.

‘What on earth?’

She opened the door and stood there in the huge pink Velcro rollers, the fluffy slippers and her dressing gown over the top of her bra and knickers. Luke was turned the other way, looking down the road.

‘Ashley next door!’

‘Luke, what?’

‘She’s gone into labour. I heard her shouting from the bathroom. Her phone’s dead and no one is there.’

‘Okay.’

‘Juliette, it’s coming, like head out coming!’

Considering Luke was a highly accomplished medical professional he had switched to member of the public mode.

Juliette turned around, took her keys off the hook and handed them to him. ‘Get my gear out of the back of the car,’ she instructed.

Juliette flew past Luke in the pink slippers, rollers in her hair and with the dressing gown flying about behind her she started down the path.

‘Have you called an ambulance?’ she shouted over her shoulder.

‘Yes, on the way.’

Luke slammed the front door shut, looked down the road for her car, ran over to it and pulled out her bags as Juliette ran down the lane in her slippers until she got to the door of the house next door to Luke’s.

She knocked on the door quickly and calmly and called out - assuming Ashley was still in the bathroom she went up the stairs.
