Chapter Fourteen

Exhilarated from his visit with Henry, Jack strode up the stairs to his house, beating Livingston to the door for the first time since returning from the continent.

“Sir…is everything all right?” The older man breathed hard as if he’d run from the back to meet him.

He handed over his hat. “Everything is just fine. Very fine indeed.” That might be a slight exaggeration, as everything wasn’t fine, but it was a whole lot more fine than it had been yesterday, when he thought he was worthless as a protector. When he thought he’d lost Toby and Katz forever. “Has Mrs. Almira come down yet?”

“No, sir. The maid went up with a tray just half hour past but said she was still sleeping.”

Of course. It was still early for her. “And the surgeon?”

Livingston studied him. “Just finished ten minutes ago, sir. He left something for the pain. Said it was a clean break and set the leg. I believe Hum can fill you in on any details.”

Then he’d returned just in time. He glanced at the stairs. What he’d prefer to do was wake Katz up with a kiss and give her his good news, but first he needed to see Toby. “Have the lads eaten then?”

Livingston actually cracked a small smile. “With gusto, though the elder is better mannered.”

Hum always seemed to rise to the level of his environment. That he’d acted according to being inside a lord’s home didn’t surprise Jack. After all, Hum was the by-blow of a peer, though he’d never admitted who this gentleman was. He might not even know. “And the younger whined and complained?”

“Not at all.” Livingston didn’t look at him as he replied.

Hmm, if he didn’t know better, he’d say the older man had taken a liking to the boys and was lying on Toby’s behalf. He’d always known Livingston had a soft spot; he just hadn’t realized it extended to children. “Very good. Then I’ll check in on the lads.”

“Is there anything else you need, sir?”

He paused in his step toward the stairs and looked over his shoulder at his butler. “Yes. Have the cook prepare another breakfast tray for Mrs. Almira and have it brought up to her. I’ll join her as soon as I’m finished with the lads.”

Livingston’s brow rose high, meeting the creases in his forehead. “Sir?”

He gave the man a mock frown. “You heard me.” He waved him away, waiting until his butler turned before allowing his smile to form.

Livingston stopped and faced him. “Sir, may I have a word with you?”

He glanced up the stairs, but his butler looked concerned. Was this what he’d been hesitating to tell him? “Yes, of course. Would you like to step into the library?”

“I’m going to have to retire, sir.”

“What? I mean, of course you will, but…” He didn’t know what to say to that.

“Not right now, but I think in five years.”

Relief flooded him. Finding a new butler right now would have made his life rather difficult. “That makes sense.
