Alfred Burnett. Born 1868 into a prosperous family, son of a merchant. Boxing champion at school. Low-level misdemeanours as a young man, which his father paid off. Nominally in the family business. Convictions for fighting and petty theft. Would be unworthy of inclusion but for his association with M. Almost certainly involved in the Harmsworth affair (see H). Worth watching.

Harmsworth — 20th December 1890. Lord Harmsworth assaulted by persons unknown outside his club, presumably in the middle of the night, found by crossing-sweeper in early hours. No witnesses. Never regained consciousness. Attack ascribed to drunken fight which got out of control, but Harmsworth was later found to have sizeable gambling debts to several men including Alfred Burnett and Col. Moran. Lord Harmsworth was twenty-four at the time of his death and heir to the Harmsworth estate and mining interests overseas.
