"Are you planning on occupying all my evenings during this, uh, courtship?" Calla asked distantly, not quite certain how to react to the command.

He turned his head on the lounger to stare into her eyes, his coffee-dark hair sleekly water-tousled.

"Every one I can get," he confirmed seriously.

Calla contented herself with an arched eyebrow but she didn't refuse his evening plans.

But when she emerged, soaking wet with perspiration and her muscles tired from Miss Marsden's demands, Calla knew a certain sense of anticipation. She was almost afraid to glance out into the lobby area of the studio in case Slade hadn't arrived.

She was so anxiously searching for him in the seating area that she didn't see him until he spoke in her ear.

"Does she always yell at you like that?" he asked, indicating Miss Marsden, who was still in the studio, discussing technique with a student.

"Keep your voice down!" Calla insisted in a fierce whisper. "No, she doesn't always yell at me like that."

She grinned. "Sometimes she yells much more loudly! She was actually rather pleased with me tonight."

The stream of women in black leotards and buns ebbed and flowed around them as they stood to one side of the entrance to the dance studio. Slade ignored the surreptitious glances from the other women and stared at Calla in astonishment.

"If I yelled at you like that at work, you'd raise hell!"

Calla lifted her chin regally, but her eyes were twinkling as she told him airily, "Miss Marsden is a mistress of the ballet!"

"And that makes it okay?"

"It certainly does!"

"I shall have to talk to her. I could use her secret!"

"Don't bother. It wouldn't work outside ballet class. Demanding, temperamental instructors are part of the mystique, you see. One expects it of them."

"I still think I could make a first-rate manager out of her!"

"You probably could, but she'd rather starve than abandon the ballet!"

"Oh, well, I have you. Maybe some of her management technique will rub off on her student! Run along and get dressed. I'm hungry."

"Calla, old friend, old dancing buddy! What have you been hiding from me?" Angie Connors demanded with a knowing grin as Calla slipped into the changing room and began peeling off her leotard in preparation for a shower.

"If I had someone like that waiting for me after dance class… !" She broke off to make a purring sound and kissed the tips of her fingers expressively.

"He's my new boss," Calla began, trying to defuse the situation. She really didn't feel like trying to explain Slade to anyone. Especially not another woman.
