After dropping anchor, Tomas stayed on Latos Island with most of the crew, restocking and checking over the ship. Meanwhile, the captain along with Raiya, Levrith, Everett, the ship’s doctor, and Kythe, his partner, made their way to Temple Island to find out exactly what had happened.

Those who’d remained on Latos Island still had a lot of questions. Thankfully, Levrith returned the next day to fill in the crew. “Apparently there were ten sorcerers throwing fireballs at them with their magic weapons. Plus forty soldiers.”

“Blimey.” Rowena leaned forward. “And they won?”

They all sat on the beach beneath the midday sun, gathered around Levrith.

Levrith nodded. “Turns out these temple people, these sages and acolytes, are sorcerers themselves.” Levrith paused. “Well, they don’t call themselves sorcerers. But they can use magic or…something… Anyway, point is they can move water and make trees grow and attack.”

“What?” Tomas blinked.

“Make trees attack?” Rowena asked.

“And they can stop the Order’s magic. Bloody unbelievable stuff.” Levrith scratched his beard.

No one spoke for several seconds, trying to process what Levrith had said.

“What about this kraken?” Nyma, a fishernaiad in the crew, asked in a soft voice. He sat beside his lover, Easton, the ship’s cook.

“That’s got to be made up.” Tomas gave an incredulous laugh.

“Nope. Not unless they are all hallucinating. Or lying.” Levrith held out his mug. Rowena topped it up with grog before taking a drink herself. “Came right out of the lake and got into the fight, throwing these Order sorcerers and soldiers around. Seems like Aneya can commune with a kraken.” Levrith pressed his lips together. “He…talks to it in his head. And when they were fighting, it came out to help them.”

“That’s something,” Tomas said, still in disbelief.

A few made noises of agreement.

A kraken. Could a kraken really have fought for Aneya? Tomas knew the naiad. Fought alongside him. A good crewmate and friend. But how did he commune with a kraken?

“Raiya’s pissed off,” Levrith said. “Thinks they’re all a bunch of liars for not telling us what they were capable of. Doesn’t trust them.”

“What’s new?” Rowena laughed and took a swig of grog.

“And Silas?” Tomas asked. “Does he trust them?” Tomas trusted his captain’s judgement. He was a good man and a good leader.

“He does. He accepts that since they didn’t trust us, it made sense for them to not tell us about their abilities.” Levrith gulped his mug. “Honestly, he’s impressed. He wants them to work with us against the Order. He hopes that having been attacked by them will bring them around to helping us.”

“Will it?” Tomas asked.

“Maybe. It’s definitely brought a few around.” Levrith stared into his mug. “My grandmother is going to join the Naiad’s Revenge.”

A few laughed. Levrith didn’t.

“Really?” Tomas had seen the old woman. She’d travelled with them on the ship to Temple Island. He couldn’t imagine her with them during a fight. “You can’t be serious.” Tomas and Rowena shared a disbelieving look.

“Turns out she is a powerful sea witch. Held her own in the battle.
