Chapter 7

Peter watched as Kate followed the other women out of the church. There went his prospective brides. He’d enjoyed talking with the teacher. He’d enjoyed looking at her, too. She was really a pretty woman when she wasn’t dressed in drab.

“Well, what happened with the women?” Kirk held a plate full of cookies.

“I suppose you got all those cookies to share with the women and me?”

Laughing, Kirk shook his head. “Nice try. I have to get cookies while I can. Not like I cook.” He held out the plate. “But I will share them with you.”

Peter took a couple of the cookies. “The women in our town can cook.”

“Yes, they can. You’d think the purpose of the church was to feed the people as well as the soul.”

“I think you’re right. I’m sure many a heart has been won for the Lord by a full stomach.”

Kirk nodded.

“So, which one do you think answered the mystery groom?”

Kirk finished the cookie he was devouring, took a sip of punch, and then sighed. His eyes narrowed as if he were looking for an outlaw. “Using my sheriff skills, I’d say all three of those women took one of the addresses.”

Grinning, Peter pointed to the door. “And here comes the one who took the fourth tab.”

Sheriff Taylor frowned. “I can’t think of a fourth bachelor. That’s going to be hard on one of those ladies.” He grinned. “But they’re all possible, Mrs. Taylors.”

Peter stared at him. “Are you the mystery groom?”

“No, but I wouldn’t mind picking one of those ladies. I’m ready to settle down. The town is peaceful enough. I’ve got my cabin and money in the bank.” Kirk whispered to him. “Which one would you pick?”

“I’m not sure. I thought I’d get to know them better and let things take a natural course.”

Kirk shook his head. “Peter, if things were to take a natural course, don’t you think we’d already be married? I think we need to help nature a little. I plan to get to know each of the women and see which one can put up with me.”

With a laugh, Peter clapped Kirk on the shoulder. “Good plan.”

Kirk looked at him with a sheriff’s suspicious eye. “But who is the mystery groom? You think it could be Angus?”

“It could be you.” Peter watched Kate. “Let’s go and meet the four suspects as you call them.” Peter walked toward the women but was intercepted by John.

“Peter, look at all the food.”

He grinned at the boy. “Just take a little of each one.”

“I have been. Mrs. Claire makes the best.” John took a bite of one of Claire’s famous sugar cookies.

“Be sure and tell her. Are you having a good time?”

John nodded. “Sometimes, I feel guilty. Like I shouldn’t be happy because Ma died.”

Peter took hold of the boy’s shoulders. “I didn’t know your mother well, but I know this about her, she wanted you to be happy. So, when you’re smiling and happy, know that your mother is smiling.”

“Thanks, Peter. You always know how to make me feel better.
