Chapter 28

2005

It had taken some doing, finding a portal between London and Argentina in Annwn. There were portals that led all over the world, of course, dotted around the city, but mapping them was an impossible job for the reeves, as the portals switched so quickly. Una couldn’t let the thanes discover her plan, so she had to explore them entirely by herself. No matter, she had done it before. The thrill of finding a new place in Annwn hadn’t worn off. After all, last time she had gone rogue, she had found the love of her life. It stood to reason that it would work out well for her again. Besides, she had a new purpose growing inside her. Two new purposes. She and Angus had found out a few weeks ago. The news had inspired her idea – a determination to make the world safe, once and for all, from people like Medraut and whatever was killing her friends.

But it turned out that finding a portal to Argentina was the easy part. Finding the woman was impossible. Una had reached out to her contacts in the South American arms of the thanes, but they were no help. Sophia still had her portal, though, which gave Una hope that she was in Annwn somewhere, perhaps as an aventure. It had taken all of her investigative skills to track her down. When she found her, Sophia was not in Argentina at all.

She was in Antarctica, next to an ice cave that glittered like crystal. Una first caught sight of her squatting beside a deep well, fishing patiently. She didn’t look up as Una approached, but Una could feel her presence from a distance, like a magnetic pull. That was how she knew she had the right person – it was the same feeling she had in Medraut’s company. That feeling of not being in control of herself. It was a sensation she had never enjoyed.

She bowed, and Sophia laughed. ‘It’s exactly that kind of behaviour that I wanted to get away from.’

Una’s Spanish was rusty, so it took her a moment to parse what Sophia was saying. She smiled and sat opposite the woman, peering into the ice well. Very suddenly, a white shape, with black bulbous eyes and a humanoid expression, emerged from the water, snapped at the humans, and then submerged once more. Una threw herself backwards, shocked.

‘Don’t mind the ningen,’ Sophia said. ‘He likes to check up on me every now and then. Make sure I’m safe.’

‘You probably know why I’m here,’ Una said, in broken Spanish.

‘I do indeed, and you’re not the first to come to me with such a request. You lot are all so obsessed with this idea that Immral is the only thing that will make the world safe. You have no clue, any of you, even when you know how destructive the power can be.’

Una leaned forward. ‘Look into my soul. You’ll see that I do understand how dangerous it is. I’ve risked my life to bring down the only other Immral in this world.
