Daylight found Anaar alone again, but in a much better mood than the morning before.

Keola had returned into the privacy of her own cabin again. Eventually. She had stayed for quite some time after they had talked things through, and to Anaar’s utter delight had been very eager to try out something rather scandalous, as she had put it. Which had involved a lot of kisses, a lot of soft touches, and a surprising amount of laughter. Whether it was because of her own feelings or because of Keola’s fresh curiosity, it all felt… different. Nothing like the nights in taverns with people she didn’t know, or the time spent with crew members who could move on like the wind at any time. In a way, it felt a lot more like that first time all those years ago had, the stolen moments below deck and frenzied kisses in the darkness of the hold. Unexpected, but not unpleasant.

They had talked, too. Still not about anything personal. If that would remain forbidden territory, then that was how it would be. They had other things to occupy them. Keola had been rather curious about the books Anaar had lent her. Had seemed emboldened by the situation to ask questions she’d obviously had the entire time, but had been too hesitant to ask. Now she wasn’t, and those questions revealed their own kind of secrets. At some point, Anaar had wondered just what kind of environment Keola had grown up in, if merely asking those questions would be deemed outrageous and being caught kissing another woman before marriage would cause a full-blown scandal. They hadn’t even gone very far – not a shirt had come off the entire time. If this was considered scandalous, then Anaar strongly suspected that all the other things she hoped to do at some point in the future would cause at the very least a few fainting spells among the dainty nobility of Keola’s home.

She rolled onto her side and grinned at the shark-mouthed Lady, barely visible on the windowsill in the grey morning light filtering through the glass. “I take it all back. If you sent her to distract me, I’m pretty sure it’s working, and I honestly don’t even care.”

Eventually, she had to drag herself out of bed, get dressed and look presentable for her crew. As much as she would have liked staying in bed and daydreaming, there was work to be done. With her hair in a braid and everything in place, Anaar was ready to leave.

Almost everything in place. With a sigh, Anaar grabbed her sash, now dry and the stain nearly invisible, and put it back on. Her good mood had evaporated. Right. She’d have to figure that out sooner rather than later.

Most of the crew save for the night watch were up already and busy with the kind of boring but necessary tasks Anaar was glad she didn’t have to do herself anymore. Most acknowledged her with a nod or a greeting as she passed before they went back to chatting with each other.
