The auction was winding to a close. We had five more items to go. We hadn’t won any of the items I’d bid on. But on the other hand, I didn’t have a bunch of stuff I’d paid too much for and wouldn’t be able to sell. That was the advantage of having the warehouse filled with treasures that Matty Goldstein had collected over the years. I could afford to be picky.

“What do you say we go grab some food before we go back to the office?” I checked my watch. It was just after noon. The auction had run fast, especially with so many people bidding. I would have thought the size of the crowd would slow the pace down. But people knew their budget and as soon as the bidding passed into crazy town, most of the professionals stopped. “We can drive back to the shop, then walk somewhere?”

“Sounds good to me. Do you have something in mind?” Heather marked off the last item as the bidding stopped on the schedule the house had given us as we walked in.

“Not really. I’m just starving since I didn’t eat breakfast this morning.” I didn’t mention my quick walk with Tessa. I was running out of steam. I needed fuel. “You pick, I’ll buy.”

“There is a new sandwich stop that I’ve heard has amazing muffulettas down the street from the shop.” Heather said as the next item came up. “Strange, this is supposed to be a credenza, not jewelry.”

I glanced at the listing. She was right.

“This is a last-minute acquisition and since the movers are a little late in getting the next scheduled item up on stage, let’s move this into a slot while we wait.” He held up a white jewelry box. “I have a certified sapphire ring in sterling silver, estimated to be from 1820 from the hallmark.”

I set up and focused on the ring, now being shown on the monitor they used for smaller items.

“That’s my ring,” Tessa gasped. “Stop them. They can’t sell my ring. It was my grandmother’s.”

I stood and headed to the front. A guard stopped me before I could reach the auctioneer. I explained that I believed the ring was part of a murder investigation. The bidding was already started with several people vying for the ring. “Call Detective Boone Charles with the New Orleans police department if you don’t believe me.”

The guard nodded and told me to stay there. Then he went up and interrupted the auctioneer. He whispered in his ear what I’d told him and then pointed my way. The auctioneer recognized me from my last visit and nodded.

“Sorry folks, the chain of ownership of this item is in question and it’s no longer up for purchase. But the good news is our credenza is now up on the stage.”

As I made my way back to my seat, I saw several people glare at me for stopping the sale. I ignored them. When I sat down, Heather handed me her phone.
