Chapter 8
Alex stared numbly after the departing cab. This was not how he had planned for the visit to end. He had anxiously anticipated Aaron’s visit over the past week. As Aaron worked on the project, he had found himself inventing excuses to call and talk with him about the project. Naturally, their conversations had led to opening up more about themselves. Their conversations had ranged into a broad range covering personal as well as work beliefs and their life experiences. Each had carefully avoided mentioning other relationships or encounters.
Family seemed to be another taboo subject for both of them. He didn’t know if such conversation crossed an invisible line and highlighted how close they were becoming despite their short acquaintance. Alex thoroughly enjoyed their talks until he guiltily reminded himself that Aaron was working on a deadline and was forced to end the conversation. As soon as he hung up his cell phone, he had wanted to call right back.
John Phillips has concluded his research into Aaron and found him to be honest, dedicated, and talented. There was nothing in Aaron’s background that sent out warning signals. Alex felt guilty about having him investigated but he couldn’t take any chances. Alex had planned for them to spend the night together in his house. He wanted to show Aaron some of his favorite spots in the city and be able to hold him in his arms at night and awake with him the next morning. Now everything had blown up in his face. He remembered with guilt the look on Aaron’s face when Julianna had introduced herself. He had debated every time they talked about telling Aaron about Julianna but he didn’t want to spoil anything and it had royally backfired on him.
The only reason that he had decided to propose to Julianna was because after all these years, he thought he wanted to appear to settle down for his mother’s sake. He saw Julianna as a means of having a child. He was bi-sexual after all and could father a child. His mother was over the roof with happiness at his engagement and was already anticipating her first grandchild.
Aaron blew all of his plans out of the water. With Aaron, it wasn’t just about the sex, it was about the closeness and how comfortable he felt around Aaron. He felt as if he could be himself at times and not be judged for anything he did or said. Too many times in the past, he had made the mistake of being himself and had paid the price. Now, he didn’t know what he wanted to do. The thought of losing Aaron was unbearable but now he had obligated himself in a way that would be both hard to fulfill and hard to quit. A hand touched his arm and he started and looked around to see the woman who had been staring at Aaron.
“Excuse, me.” The woman said anxiously. “Was that Aaron Tucker you were speaking with a moment ago?”
“Yes.
