Chapter 9
âStupid. Stupid. Stupid.â Becca hopped down the back steps, trying to pull on a recalcitrant shoe.
Why had she thought heâd respond to her kiss? He was like a stuffed dummy. Not like before. He couldnât resist her when theyâd been teenagers.
Sheâd been in love. Thought sheâd been in love. At sixteen it was probably infatuation. And hormones. Definitely hormones on his side. Sheâd been stupid back then too. Thinking the friendship theyâd shared for years meant she was more than a convenient lay when it turned physical.
It was hard trying to sort out the truth of what happened nearly thirteen years ago. It was nearly half her life away. Sheâd been only a few years older than the twins.
She halted at Morganâs gateway. So damn young. At least they werenât like her. Needy. Desperate to be loved. Or were they? Theyâd taken to Morgan easily, as if they had a dad-shaped hole in their hearts perfect for slotting him into their lives. Was that any protection?
The lights were on at home and it was past dinner time. Sheâd wasted ages with Morgan and they were still no further forward. Unless you count his wanting to see a solicitor. She picked up the pace, jogging past Thackeryâs truck and up the back stairs.
Thackery was at the sink, washing up.
âWhere are Gabby and Edward?â
âIn bed. Gabby pretty much flaked out after tea. I gave them veggie pasta.â He slotted another plate into the rack. âDan is watching a movie.â
Becca slumped onto a chair. âThanks. I lost track of the time.â
âNo worries. How did it go with Morgan?â
Thackery was non-judgemental making it easy to respond. She knew it wouldnât go further. âWe cleared up a few things. Morgan is going to make an appointment with the solicitor to do things properly.â
âIs he planning to pay child support?â
Becca frowned. âI donât know. We didnât discuss it.â
Thackery stared at her, a tea towel bunched in his hand. âDid you talk about how things are going to work with the twins? Shared custody, visiting rights. Those minor details?â
Shared custody. She hadnât considered it. Her heart hammered in her chest as she gazed up at Thackery. âWill I have to let him take them for weekends and holidays?â
âI imagine so. Theyâre his children and he has parental rights that need to be considered. Legally he could request equal time. Especially as youâve had sole custody since birth and you arenât disputing his relationship. Maybe you should discuss this with your solicitor before you meet with Morgan.â
âHow do you know this stuff?â
âIt wasnât all sweetness and light at home when I was growing up. The divorce was pretty savage.â
She knew the kids had been split up. Two each to the parents until their mum died and her two went to stay with their granddad. âDo you miss the others?â
âNo. I like being by myself. Winâs the same.â He hung the tea towel on the rack with an air of finality. âIâll be off now.â
She thanked him again but he didnât dawdle, the truck rumbling into life moments after he left the house.
